Germany Admits Overreliance on U.S. for Defense, Signs New UK Treaty to Boost Military Ties

Germany’s leader says it’s time for Europe to step up and share the load

Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz has admitted that Europe depended too much on the United States for its defense — but says that’s now changing. In a recent interview, Merz said Europe is taking more responsibility, especially as the war in Ukraine continues to threaten regional security.

While visiting the UK this week, Merz signed a major new treaty with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The agreement aims to boost defense cooperation, tackle illegal migration, and expand student exchange programs — part of a broader push to strengthen Europe’s role in global security.

Europe’s Wake-Up Call

In an interview with the BBC, Merz didn’t shy away from past mistakes.

“We have been free-riders in the past,” he admitted. “They’re asking us to do more, and we are doing more.”

He said Europe and the U.S. are now closely aligned, especially when it comes to Ukraine and trade issues. Merz revealed he speaks weekly with U.S. President Donald Trump, discussing the war and transatlantic trade tensions.

“We are coordinating our efforts,” he said. “One issue is the war in Ukraine, and the second is our trade debates and tariffs.”

A Stronger Military Partnership

The newly signed UK-Germany treaty deepens cooperation in several areas. Military firms in both countries already work together on equipment like the Typhoon fighter jet and Boxer vehicles. Now, they plan to co-launch export campaigns and develop new weapons, including a long-range missile.

Merz also announced more long-range weapons would soon be sent to Ukraine, saying,

“We are seeing a big threat, and the threat is Russia.”

This comes as Germany works with France and the UK to form a tighter “E3” alliance focused on defense, foreign policy, and the economy.

From Criticism to Action

The push for stronger European defense isn’t just about Russia. During Germany’s last election, U.S. Vice President JD Vance criticized European nations for not doing enough. Merz said those remarks motivated his government to act faster.

Before taking office, he helped change Germany’s constitution to raise defense spending.

“We are not strong enough. Our army is not strong enough,” he said.

According to Canan Atilgan of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, “In Munich, he thought we lost the Americans — we have to look after ourselves.”

Beyond Defense: Migration, Trade, and Students

The UK-Germany deal includes more than military promises. Germany has pledged to pass a new law banning the storage of small boats often used by people smugglers — a response to a BBC investigation.

The treaty also outlines plans for a direct train line between London and Berlin and expanded student exchanges. Merz said he hopes young people will be the first to benefit from the renewed partnership.

Looking Ahead

At 69, Merz is seen as a firm believer in close U.S.-Europe ties. He previously worked for an American investment firm, though he once criticized Trump’s leadership as “indifferent to Europe.”

Asked if that view has changed, Merz said no — warning that the U.S. is increasingly focused on Asia and that Europe must take care of its own security.

He also commented on looming U.S. tariffs that could hurt German exports but said Trump is open to a deal.

“He gets it,” Merz said. “He sees the challenges and is willing to come to an agreement.”

The treaty signed in London may mark the beginning of a stronger, more balanced partnership between Europe and its allies — with Germany promising to lead, not just follow.
