Ed Sheeran Stopped by Indian Police for Busking Without Permission

Surprise Street Performance Cut Short

Ed Sheeran delighted fans in Bangalore, India, this weekend with a surprise street performance—until local police abruptly shut it down. The four-time Grammy winner was mid-song on Church Street when officers intervened, citing a lack of permission for the impromptu concert.

Police Pull the Plug on ‘Shape of You’

While performing his hit “Shape of You,” Sheeran was suddenly interrupted when a uniformed officer pulled the plug on his microphone and guitar, leaving the singer visibly frustrated. Images circulating on social media show him throwing up his hands in disbelief as the performance came to an unexpected halt.

Did Sheeran Have Permission?

Authorities maintain that Sheeran was denied approval to busk on Church Street—a bustling pedestrian zone where officials aim to keep traffic moving.

“We rejected it because Church Street is a very busy area, and we try to keep people moving,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Shekhar H. Tekkannavar.

However, Sheeran disputed this claim, insisting that his team had secured the necessary permission beforehand.

“We had permission to busk,” he wrote on Instagram shortly after the incident. “This was planned out before, it wasn’t just us randomly turning up.”

Social Media Uproar

The incident quickly went viral, with fans sharing clips of Sheeran’s brief performance.

“Went for a casual walk on Church Street and stumbled upon Ed Sheeran performing live. What a city!” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

While some defended the police’s decision, others criticized local authorities for shutting down what they saw as a harmless and rare moment of live music. Many suggested that officials should focus on more pressing issues, such as Bangalore’s traffic congestion and water shortages instead.

Sheeran’s India Tour Continues

Despite the setback, Sheeran remains a hugely popular artist in India, having played a sold-out concert in Mumbai last year. His current tour includes two more scheduled performances in the country before he moves on to China and the United Arab Emirates.
