Deadly Floods Hit Northeast Australia, Thousands Evacuated

One Dead as Torrential Rains Cause Devastating Floods

Northeast Australia is battling catastrophic floods, leaving one person dead and forcing thousands to evacuate. The relentless downpour, which began on Friday, has submerged homes and businesses, particularly in Ingham and Townsville. Emergency warnings have been issued across North Queensland, urging residents in low-lying areas to flee immediately.

Tragic Death in Floodwaters

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli confirmed that a woman drowned in Ingham on Sunday after a rescue boat capsized upon striking a tree. Five others on board were rescued.

“That’s a really tight-knit community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Crisafulli said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “heartbreaking news” and assured that the federal government would provide all necessary resources to deal with the disaster.

Emergency Evacuations in Townsville

In Bluewater, a suburb of Townsville, authorities issued an emergency alert on Sunday, warning that residents’ lives were at risk.

“Water is rising fast and there will be dangerous and life-threatening flooding,” stated the Townsville Local Disaster Management Group.

Residents in Townsville’s “black zone”, the most flood-prone area, were urged to evacuate by midday Sunday. Evacuation centers have been set up for those in need of shelter.

Crocodile Warning Amid Rising Waters

Queensland’s Department of Environment, Science and Innovation has warned that crocodiles could be lurking in the floodwaters.

“During flooding, crocodiles can turn up in places they haven’t been seen before as they move about in search of calmer waters,” officials said.

Residents are advised to stay out of floodwaters and remain vigilant.

Unprecedented Rainfall and Severe Weather Continues

The floods have been triggered by two low-pressure tropical systems, bringing days of torrential rain and strong winds, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

  • Up to 600 mm (23 inches) of rain has fallen in some areas within 24 hours.
  • Some regions received 250 mm in just six hours.
  • The Herbert River in Ingham is nearing historic levels, expected to match or exceed the devastating 1967 floods.

With more heavy rain and flash flooding expected through Monday, authorities are urging residents to stay alert, follow evacuation orders, and prioritize safety.

A Flood Disaster Unfolding

Townsville, home to 200,000 people, suffered a catastrophic flood in 2019, labeled a “one-in-100-year event.” This weekend’s deluge could be just as severe.

“Take precautions, prepare for the worst, listen to the advice. This is a serious event,” Premier Crisafulli warned.

As Australia battles this major flood crisis, emergency responders remain on high alert, ready to assist those in danger. Evacuations, rescue efforts, and disaster relief operations continue as the extreme weather persists.
