China Responds with Tariffs on U.S. Goods and Investigates Google

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced new countermeasures against the U.S. on Tuesday, including tariffs on a range of U.S. products and an investigation into Google. These actions come in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports, escalating trade tensions between the two countries.

Tariffs on U.S. Products

China’s government revealed it would impose a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas products, along with a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-displacement cars. The move is a direct counter to the 10% tariff that President Trump had implemented on Chinese goods earlier, which was set to take effect on Tuesday.

In its official statement, China condemned the U.S. actions, stating, “The U.S.’s unilateral tariff increase seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organization. It is not only unhelpful in solving its own problems, but also damages normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the U.S.”

Growing Tensions Over Trade

The tariffs come as trade tensions between the two nations continue to rise. While Trump’s 10% tariffs on Chinese goods were scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Trump also planned to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming days, signaling that both sides were open to further negotiation.

Google Under Investigation

In addition to imposing tariffs, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation announced an investigation into Google, suspecting the company of violating antitrust laws. While the announcement did not directly mention any tariffs on Google-related products, the timing is notable—coming just minutes after the U.S. tariffs were set to go into effect. The investigation marks a further escalation in China’s regulatory scrutiny of U.S. tech companies.

Conclusion

The escalating trade dispute between China and the U.S. continues to evolve, with both sides imposing tariffs and engaging in strategic economic actions. As China retaliates with tariffs on U.S. products and scrutinizes major tech companies like Google, the global economic landscape remains uncertain, with further talks between Trump and Xi expected to influence the direction of the conflict.
