LOS ANGELES, United States – Nirvana received the 2026 MTV Video Vanguard Award on Sunday, bringing Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist Pat Smear together on the MTV Video Music Awards stage to accept one of the ceremony’s major career honors.

The award was presented by Public Enemy’s Chuck D at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Novoselic spoke for the band, reflecting on Nirvana’s enduring impact and remembering frontman Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994.

Nirvana’s appearance marked the latest chapter in a relationship with the VMAs that began in 1992, when the band performed at the ceremony for the first time. MTV and Paramount had announced the honor on Sept. 9, exactly 34 years after that debut.

A tribute to Kurt Cobain

Novoselic used the acceptance speech to place the award in the context of Nirvana’s original lineup and Cobain’s songwriting.

He described Cobain as one of the greatest artists of all time and said the band’s music had ultimately taken on a life beyond its creators.

Grohl also spoke about Cobain, saying there was still something missing and that he thinks about his former bandmate every day. He thanked people for continuing to pay attention to Nirvana’s music.

Cobain died in April 1994 at age 27, ending Nirvana’s original run as a band. Grohl later founded Foo Fighters, while Novoselic continued working as a musician and remained involved in occasional Nirvana-related reunions.

The videos that shaped Nirvana’s MTV legacy

The Video Vanguard Award recognizes artists whose work has made a significant contribution to music videos and visual culture.

Nirvana’s MTV legacy was built around a relatively small number of highly influential videos, including “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “In Bloom” and “Heart-Shaped Box.” The band’s official website continues to feature those videos in its archive.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” helped propel Nirvana into mainstream culture following the release of Nevermind in 1991. At the 1992 VMAs, the video won Best New Artist in a Video and Best Alternative Video.

“In Bloom” won Best Alternative Video at the 1993 VMAs, while “Heart-Shaped Box” received the same award in 1994.

Those awards came during Nirvana’s brief commercial peak, when the band helped shift mainstream rock toward the Pacific Northwest’s grunge scene.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind as helping trigger a major cultural change and identifies the band’s raw, punk-influenced approach as an important part of its legacy. Nirvana was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014.

The VMAs and Nirvana’s long connection

Nirvana’s first VMA appearance in 1992 became one of the most remembered performances in the show’s history.

The band performed “Lithium” before the set descended into equipment destruction and feedback. That appearance came as Nirvana was rapidly becoming one of the most prominent alternative-rock acts in the United States.

MTV later kept Nirvana’s connection to the network alive through performances and archived music videos, including the band’s celebrated MTV Unplugged appearance.

The 2026 award therefore recognizes more than the band’s recorded music. It also acknowledges the role its visual work and performances played in MTV’s development during the early 1990s.

Paramount described the 2026 honor as coming 34 years after Nirvana first appeared on the VMAs stage and said the band had helped shape music, culture and MTV.

A reunion without a Nirvana performance

The award ceremony brought Grohl, Novoselic and Smear together publicly, but Nirvana did not perform a musical set during the presentation.

Smear had joined Nirvana on tour in 1993 and 1994 and has participated in later reunions with Grohl and Novoselic. His presence alongside the two surviving core members gave the ceremony a connection to the band’s final period before Cobain’s death.

The surviving members have reunited only periodically since Nirvana ended. They performed together at the band’s 2014 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and have appeared for occasional special performances in the years since.

The VMAs appearance was therefore both an awards moment and a rare public gathering of musicians associated with Nirvana’s original era.

An award reflecting a short but lasting career

Nirvana released three studio albums during its original run: Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero. The band’s recording career ended after Cobain’s death, but its influence continued through reissues, archival releases, tribute performances and the work of former members.

The band remains closely identified with the early-1990s transformation of alternative rock from a largely peripheral genre into a major part of mainstream popular music. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame credits Nirvana with helping define that shift.

The Video Vanguard Award places that legacy within the specific history of music television.

For MTV, Nirvana’s importance is tied not only to the popularity of songs such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit” but also to the visual identity surrounding them and the band’s willingness to challenge the conventions of polished music television.

Three decades after Cobain’s death, the award also underscored how much of Nirvana’s cultural influence continues to be connected to images and performances first broadcast during the band’s brief period at the center of MTV’s programming.

The 2026 VMAs thus brought Nirvana back to the same institution that helped introduce the band to a global television audience in the early 1990s.

Rob Reiner has received a posthumous Emmy for his guest performance in The Bear, adding a final television honor to a career that spanned acting, directing, writing and producing.

Reiner won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series at the 78th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday. The Television Academy lists him as the winner for his performance as Albert in the fourth-season episode “Tonnato.”

The honor is Reiner’s third Emmy and his first acting win since 1978, when he was recognized for playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family.

A Posthumous Television Honor

Reiner died in December 2025 at age 78. His appearance in The Bear became one of his final television performances.

In the series, Reiner played Albert Schnurr, a restaurant consultant who develops a mentoring relationship with Ebraheim, portrayed by Edwin Lee Gibson. The role gave the veteran performer a supporting presence in the fourth season while connecting his late-career work with a new generation of television audiences.

Reiner’s performance was nominated alongside Michael J. Fox, Brett Goldstein, Hamish Linklater, Christopher McDonald and Connor Storrie.

A Career Spanning Television and Film

The Emmy adds to a television legacy that began more than five decades ago with All in the Family. Reiner won two Emmys for his work on the landmark sitcom, where he portrayed Archie Bunker’s son-in-law, Michael Stivic.

The Television Academy records his The Bear victory as his third Emmy. He was also nominated twice in 2024 for the documentary special Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, including for directing.

Beyond television, Reiner established himself as a filmmaker with credits including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally…

The Bear Becomes Part of Reiner’s Legacy

Reiner’s role in The Bear came during a later stage of his career, when his work was focused largely on directing, writing and producing while he continued to make occasional acting appearances.

His portrayal of Albert was relatively small but earned recognition in one of television’s major awards programs. The Emmy places “Tonnato” alongside All in the Family in Reiner’s record of television achievements.

His posthumous victory also gives The Bear another notable entry in its awards history while serving as a final recognition of an entertainer whose career crossed several generations of American television and film.

Creative Arts Emmys Lead Into Primetime Ceremony

Reiner’s award was among the honors presented during the second night of the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The two-night event recognizes television performances and production achievements ahead of the main Primetime Emmy ceremony scheduled for Sept. 14.

The guest-acting categories were among the evening’s notable honors, with Reiner’s posthumous victory providing a significant moment in the ceremony.

For Reiner, the award extends an Emmy legacy that began with All in the Family and now includes his final television performance in The Bear.

The entertainment veteran had been scheduled to receive an honorary Palme d’Or during the event’s final ceremony in Cannes, France. Her absence removes one of the festival’s most anticipated appearances while preserving the planned tribute to her decades-long career.

According to a statement released by festival organizers, Streisand said doctors advised her not to travel as she continues recovering from the injury. The singer, actor, and filmmaker added that she was disappointed to miss the ceremony and reunite with colleagues during the festival’s 79th edition.

Cannes Maintains Honorary Tribute

Festival officials confirmed that the honorary Palme d’Or presentation will still proceed despite Streisand’s absence. The award recognizes her contributions across film, music, and directing, adding her name to a group of internationally recognized cinema figures honored by Cannes in recent years.

The 2026 festival has already featured multiple honorary recognitions. Peter Jackson received an honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony, while John Travolta was unexpectedly honored ahead of the premiere of his directorial debut “Propeller One-Way Night Coach.”

Industry and Cultural Significance

Streisand’s planned appearance had been viewed as one of the festival’s major Hollywood moments amid a year with fewer large studio-driven premieres at Cannes. Industry observers noted that her recognition reflected the festival’s continued emphasis on honoring artists with influence across multiple entertainment sectors, including film, television, and music.

The honorary Palme d’Or remains one of Cannes’ highest distinctions outside the main competition. Organizers said the tribute to Streisand’s career will continue during the festival’s closing events later this week.

Founded in 2017, Neon has built its reputation through filmmaker-focused acquisitions and targeted release strategies rather than franchise-driven programming.
Neon’s current Cannes slate includes several high-profile competition entries from internationally recognized filmmakers.
Tom Quinn, the company’s chief executive and co-founder, told the Associated Press that Neon’s acquisition philosophy remains centered on filmmakers rather than intellectual property. He said the company’s approach prioritizes long-term creative partnerships and individualized release campaigns over broader algorithm-based strategies.

Hollywood’s Festival Presence Continues to Shift

The distributor’s rise also reflects broader structural changes within the entertainment business. Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux recently acknowledged the reduced presence of major Hollywood studios at the festival, noting that independent distributors and specialty labels increasingly dominate the international prestige film landscape.

While studios continue to focus heavily on large-scale franchise releases and theatrical event films, companies such as Neon and A24 have capitalized on audience demand for original and internationally produced cinema. Analysts say that shift has helped reshape awards season dynamics over the past decade, particularly as non-English-language films gain wider mainstream recognition.

The commercial results remain modest compared with blockbuster franchises. However, Neon’s ability to convert festival acclaim into awards momentum has become one of the company’s defining strengths. The distributor’s biggest box office release to date remains Longlegs, which generated approximately $75 million globally, according to industry figures cited in the AP report.

International Cinema Gains Broader Audience Reach

The success of films like Parasite marked a turning point for subtitled cinema in North America and other English-language markets. Industry executives and exhibitors increasingly view international storytelling as commercially viable beyond niche arthouse audiences.

Neon’s release model has emphasized curated theatrical campaigns and awards positioning tailored to each film rather than standardized distribution templates. The company’s smaller scale, executives say, allows for greater flexibility in how projects are marketed and introduced to audiences.

As the 2026 Cannes Film Festival opens, Neon’s presence underscores how independent distributors now occupy a central role in shaping the global awards conversation. Whether the company extends its Palme d’Or streak to seven years remains uncertain, but its influence on contemporary prestige cinema appears firmly established.

The announcement places both creators at the center of one of the most prestigious honors in American literature and theater.

The awards underscore a year in which storytelling across page and stage continued to reflect shifting cultural and historical themes, with jurors highlighting works that engage with questions of identity, conflict, and collective memory.

Pulitzer Committee Highlights Expanding Artistic Range

According to the Pulitzer Prize board announcement, this year’s selections in the arts categories reflect a broadening of narrative form and subject matter across American creative industries. The recognition of Kraus and Wohl aligns with a wider trend of literary and theatrical works addressing complex social and historical landscapes.

Angel Down, authored by Daniel Kraus, continues the writer’s established focus on emotionally driven, genre-crossing storytelling. Kraus has built a career spanning fiction and screenwriting, often working at the intersection of literary and cinematic narrative structures.

Bess Wohl’s Liberation, meanwhile, extends her reputation in contemporary theater, where she has been recognized for works that examine personal and political identity through ensemble-driven storytelling.

Industry Context and Creative Trajectories

The Pulitzer Prize remains one of the most influential benchmarks for achievement in American arts and letters. Winners frequently see heightened visibility across publishing, theater production, and adaptation markets following the announcement.

Kraus has previously collaborated on projects across film and television, while Wohl’s work has been staged in major U.S. theater circuits, contributing to ongoing discussions about representation and generational memory in modern playwriting.

Industry observers note that Pulitzer recognition often amplifies opportunities for international distribution and adaptation, particularly for works already situated within broader cultural debates.

Cultural Significance Across Literature and Stage

This year’s arts honors arrive amid a continued resurgence in literary fiction and original stage writing that engages with contemporary political and historical themes. Both Angel Down and Liberation reflect a broader creative movement toward narratives that interrogate institutional and personal histories.

The selection of works across different mediums also highlights the Pulitzer board’s continued emphasis on artistic diversity, spanning traditional literary fiction and experimental theatrical forms.

Awards Momentum and Broader Industry Impact

Pulitzer recognition frequently serves as a catalyst for renewed publishing interest and stage revivals, particularly in markets such as New York and London. For playwrights and novelists alike, the award can significantly expand readership and production potential.

In the case of Kraus and Wohl, the acknowledgment places both creators within a distinguished group of contemporary artists whose work is shaping current discourse in American arts and culture.

The Academy Awards will move from Hollywood to downtown Los Angeles starting in 2029, marking a significant venue shift for the film industry’s most prominent awards ceremony. The relocation coincides with the telecast’s transition from ABC to YouTube, reflecting broader changes in both distribution strategy and event staging.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed it has signed a 10-year agreement with AEG to host the ceremony at the Peacock Theater, located within the L.A. Live entertainment complex.

Venue Transition and Industry Strategy

The move ends the Oscars’ long-standing run at the Dolby Theatre, which has hosted the ceremony since 2002. According to the Academy, the Dolby Theatre will remain the venue through the 100th ceremony in 2028, concluding its tenure during the show’s final years on ABC.

The shift to the Peacock Theater represents both a logistical and strategic recalibration. With a seating capacity of approximately 7,000—nearly double that of the Dolby—the new venue offers expanded scale for production, audience accommodation and global broadcast staging.

Industry observers note that the relocation aligns with the Academy’s broader effort to modernize the Oscars’ presentation, particularly as it transitions to a digital-first distribution model via YouTube.

The Peacock Theater sits adjacent to Crypto.com Arena and forms part of the larger L.A. Live complex, a major entertainment district that includes hotels, restaurants and event spaces. The area has increasingly hosted high-profile industry events, including the Primetime Emmy Awards and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The venue, which opened in 2007 and was previously known as the Nokia Theatre and Microsoft Theater, has established itself as a central site for televised entertainment events. Its larger open-air plaza and surrounding infrastructure provide expanded space for red carpet logistics and audience flow compared to the more compact Hollywood Boulevard setting.

Production Upgrades and Long-Term Agreement

Under the agreement, AEG will invest in significant upgrades to the Peacock Theater’s technical infrastructure to meet the specific demands of the Oscars broadcast. The Academy said it will work closely with the operator to integrate customized design elements tailored to the ceremony’s production scale.

The long-term deal underscores a shift toward purpose-built environments capable of accommodating evolving broadcast technologies, audience expectations and global streaming distribution.

Historical Context of Oscars Venues

While the Dolby Theatre has provided the Oscars with its most stable home, the ceremony has historically moved across multiple venues in Los Angeles. Earlier locations included major hotels, followed by extended runs at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion from 1968 to 1986 and the Shrine Auditorium in subsequent years.

The upcoming relocation marks one of the most consequential venue changes in recent decades, reflecting both the evolution of Los Angeles as an entertainment capital and the Academy’s shifting priorities in a digital media landscape.

The animated feature KPop Demon Hunters captured the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for both international animation and the global rise of Korean pop culture.

The Netflix-backed production blends musical performance, action storytelling and K-pop aesthetics, and its awards-season momentum culminated in the industry’s top honor for animated filmmaking. The win further highlights the entertainment industry’s growing embrace of globally influenced stories and original animated properties.

Awards Season Momentum

Directed by Maggie Kang, the film had already emerged as a leading contender throughout the awards circuit before the Oscars ceremony. It secured major precursor wins, including recognition at the Producers Guild Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, strengthening expectations for its Academy victory.

At the Oscars, the film competed against nominees including Elio, Zootopia 2, Arco, and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain.

Industry observers noted that many competing titles had secured relatively few major awards during the lead-up to the ceremony, leaving the Netflix production widely viewed as the category’s frontrunner.

During her acceptance speech, Kang acknowledged the film’s cultural significance and the broader representation it brings to international audiences. She dedicated the award to “Korea and Koreans everywhere,” highlighting the long journey toward wider on-screen representation.

Blending Animation, Music and K-Pop Storytelling

The film follows HUNTR/X, a fictional Korean girl group whose members secretly battle supernatural forces while navigating the pressures of fame and identity. Its visual style combines hand-drawn anime influences with stylized 3D CGI, giving the action-driven narrative a distinctive aesthetic.

Alongside its cinematic success, the project also generated substantial music industry impact. The soundtrack featured multiple charting songs, including the Grammy-winning single Golden, which helped propel the album onto major music charts tracked by Billboard.

Eight tracks from the film’s soundtrack appeared on the Billboard Hot 100, an unusual achievement for an animated film and evidence of the project’s crossover appeal between film and pop music audiences.

Cultural Influence Beyond the Screen

The film’s popularity extended beyond cinemas and streaming platforms. The fictional group HUNTR/X — voiced and performed by artists including Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami — gained a large online following and appeared in high-profile media moments.

The trio performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and were featured during the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, where they shared the stage with Bad Bunny.

Actor Arden Cho, who provided the speaking voice for the character Rumi, also drew attention during the film’s rise and was named one of the Associated Press’ breakthrough entertainers of 2025.

A Continued Shift Toward Original Animation

The Academy’s recognition of the film also reflects a broader trend toward honoring original animated stories rather than adaptations of established intellectual property.

Recent winners in the category have included The Boy and the Heron, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and Flow, signaling increased global diversity within the animation field.

Kang previously explained that the film intentionally immerses audiences in Korean cultural settings rather than simplifying them for Western viewers, arguing that authentic storytelling can help broaden international understanding.

With its Oscar victory, KPop Demon Hunters now stands as both a major awards-season success and a notable example of the entertainment industry’s growing openness to globally rooted stories that resonate across film, music and streaming platforms.

LOS ANGELES — Sean Penn earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in One Battle After Another during the 2026 ceremony of the Academy Awards, marking another milestone in a career that has spanned more than four decades.

The 65-year-old actor did not attend the ceremony, leaving presenter Kieran Culkin to accept the moment on stage with a brief acknowledgment of Penn’s absence. The win represents Penn’s third Oscar overall and underscores the continuing industry recognition for one of Hollywood’s most established dramatic performers.

Career Milestone in Political Drama

Penn’s award-winning performance came in director Paul Thomas Anderson’s political drama, where he portrays Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, a seasoned strategist navigating the ideological conflicts and shifting alliances within a long-running political movement.

The role centers on a figure shaped by decades of activism and power struggles, blending calculated influence with personal reflection. Critics and industry observers noted the restrained intensity of Penn’s performance, which anchors the ensemble-driven narrative and adds gravitas to the film’s political themes.

The recognition places Penn among the few actors to win multiple Academy Awards across different categories, further cementing his reputation for complex character work.

Absence From Awards Season Events

Penn’s absence from the Oscars ceremony followed a broader pattern during the 2026 awards season. The actor also did not attend the BAFTA Film Awards or the Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier in the year.

During the Oscars broadcast, Culkin acknowledged the absence briefly while announcing the result, noting that Penn was unable—or chose not—to attend the ceremony.

Penn has skipped the Oscars before despite nominations. He was absent from ceremonies tied to earlier nominations for Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown, and I Am Sam.

Third Oscar in a Long Career

The supporting actor win marks Penn’s third Academy Award overall. He previously won Best Actor for his roles in Mystic River (2003), directed by Clint Eastwood, and Milk (2008), where he portrayed San Francisco politician and LGBTQ rights pioneer Harvey Milk.

Across his career, Penn has built a reputation for intense dramatic roles that often explore morally complex characters and political themes.

Industry observers frequently cite his performances in films such as Dead Man Walking, Carlito’s Way, The Thin Red Line, and I Am Sam as examples of his range and long-standing influence within American cinema.

Competitive Supporting Actor Field

Penn’s victory came from a competitive lineup of nominees that reflected the international scope of contemporary film production. The category also included Delroy Lindo, Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi and Stellan Skarsgård.

Industry analysts noted that the category featured a mix of veteran performers and emerging international stars, highlighting the increasing diversity of casting across major studio and independent productions.

Penn’s win ultimately reinforced the Academy’s long-standing recognition of actors whose careers have combined critical acclaim with sustained influence in film.
