Thousands Arrested in Memphis Task Force Operation Creates Court and Jail Backlog

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Journos News) – Since late September, Memphis, Tennessee, has experienced a surge in law enforcement activity after a task force ordered by former President Donald Trump began targeting crime in the city. The initiative, involving federal, state, and local officers along with National Guard support, has led to over 2,800 arrests and more than 28,000 traffic citations in a city of approximately 610,000 residents. Officials warn that the resulting pressure on courts and jails could persist for months or even years.

Background of the Memphis Safe Task Force

The Memphis Safe Task Force was launched with the stated goal of reducing violent crime in the city, which has struggled with rising homicide rates. Between 2018 and 2024, homicides increased by 33% and aggravated assaults rose 41%, according to AH Datalytics, a national crime data tracker. Despite a 20% decline in reported crimes during the first nine months of 2025, authorities pursued an aggressive enforcement strategy targeting fugitives, traffic violations, and other offenses.

Supported by Republican Governor Bill Lee, the task force represents a combined federal-state-local effort to curb violent crime, including nearly 300 homicides in 2022 and close to 400 in 2023. Task force operations have involved traffic stops, warrant executions, and fugitive searches, generating both praise for crime reduction efforts and criticism over community impacts.

Community Concerns and Minority Impact

Critics in Memphis, a majority-Black city, argue that the task force disproportionately affects minority communities and intimidates law-abiding residents. Some Latino residents report avoiding workplaces, churches, and restaurants for fear of detention or harassment. Administrative warrants, particularly related to immigration enforcement, accounted for 319 arrests by late October.

Local advocacy groups warn of broader social consequences. Josh Spickler, executive director of Just City, a Memphis-based criminal justice reform organization, described the human cost as “astounding.” Community leaders express concern that such measures may undermine trust between residents and law enforcement while creating lasting social disruption.

Strain on Courts and Legal System

The surge in arrests has significantly impacted Memphis’s aging criminal courthouse. Court dockets are crowded, forcing defendants to wait longer for hearings, while traffic court backlogs have caused some residents to miss work. Shelby County officials are exploring options to address the overload, including night and weekend court sessions, but such measures would incur additional costs.

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy noted that the deployment could have benefited from more planning. “More thought could have been put into the downstream effects of the increased arrest numbers,” he said, citing the extended waiting periods for bail hearings and the strain on court resources.

Overcrowding at Shelby County Jail

Shelby County Jail, designed for 2,400 inmates, held an average of 3,195 detainees in September 2025, with numbers expected to rise. Inmates are temporarily being housed at other facilities, including some outside the county, complicating legal representation and visitation. Chief Jailer Kirk Fields requested at least $1.5 million in emergency funds to cover additional costs for food, clothing, bedding, and staffing.

The increase in jail bookings, estimated at 40% compared with the previous year, has also prompted officials to consider expanding staffing, increasing public defender and prosecutor availability, and providing support for detained individuals with low-level offenses.

Judicial Response and Additional Measures

Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris has requested additional judges to handle the projected 3,500–5,000 arrests anticipated from task force operations. The Tennessee Supreme Court has designated two senior judges to assist if necessary but determined that additional permanent judges were not immediately required.

Authorities are exploring flexible scheduling, including weekend and night courts, and potential clinics for resolving low-level misdemeanor cases. Mulroy’s office is also reviewing whether pretrial detention is justified for individuals not considered a flight risk or public danger.

Task Force Perspective

Ryan Guay, spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service and the Memphis Safe Task Force, emphasized that high arrest numbers reflect operational effectiveness. “We recognize that this success places additional demands on the broader criminal justice system, including courts and detention facilities,” he stated.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has made a satellite prison camp available to the task force, with oversight by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Officials have declined to specify the location for operational security reasons.

Looking Ahead

The Memphis Safe Task Force has underscored the challenges of balancing aggressive crime-fighting initiatives with the capacity of local judicial and correctional systems. As officials navigate jail overcrowding, court backlogs, and community concerns, the city faces a prolonged period of adaptation and resource allocation to accommodate the task force’s impact.

Two police officers lost their lives and a deputy was wounded during a late-night response in Box Elder County

Published Time: 08-18-2025, 20:45

Two police officers in Utah were fatally shot and a sheriff’s deputy was injured Sunday night when a suspect opened fire during a domestic disturbance call in Box Elder County. Authorities confirmed the gunman was later taken into custody after bystanders persuaded him to drop his weapon.

The shooting has shaken communities across northern Utah, with local leaders and law enforcement agencies calling the officers’ deaths a devastating loss.

Officers Respond to Disturbance Near Elementary School

According to a statement released Monday by the Brigham City Police Department, officers from the Tremonton Garland Police Department and a deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. following multiple 911 hang-up calls. The calls originated from a residence near North Park Elementary School.

As one Tremonton Garland officer spoke with an individual outside the home regarding a possible domestic disturbance, an armed man emerged and immediately opened fire. The officer was struck and killed at the scene.

When a second Tremonton Garland officer rushed forward to help, the suspect fired again, fatally wounding the second officer.

Deputy and Police Dog Also Shot

Authorities reported that the Box Elder County Sheriff’s deputy and his police service dog came under fire as their patrol vehicle arrived. Both were shot while inside the vehicle.

The deputy was rushed to a nearby hospital, where officials say he remains in fair condition. The police dog was transported to a veterinary clinic and is also expected to recover.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

Police said nearby residents played a critical role in ending the standoff. Witnesses convinced the suspect to put down his weapon, allowing responding officers to move in and safely take him into custody.

The male suspect, whose identity has not been released, now faces charges of aggravated murder and additional offenses related to the attack. Officials stated the case remains under active investigation.

Police Withhold Identities of Fallen Officers

As of Monday, authorities have not released the names of the two Tremonton Garland officers or the wounded deputy. Officials cited the need to notify and support the families before making identities public.

In a written statement, the Brigham City Police Department said:

“Tragedies like these rock an entire community, state and even nation. These officers and their families served every day, and they will forever be remembered as heroes.”

Emergency Response Across Counties

Detective Crystal Beck of the Brigham City Police told reporters that after the initial exchange of gunfire, the officers at the scene called for backup. At some point, communication with them stopped, prompting an urgent, large-scale response.

Police and SWAT teams from Box Elder, Weber, and Cache Counties converged on the area. Authorities later confirmed the suspect was not barricaded inside the home, easing initial fears of an extended standoff.

Officials also reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat but urged residents to avoid the area while the investigation continued into Monday morning.

Eyewitness Account: “It Was Pretty Freaky”

Local resident Randy Kilman told FOX13 Salt Lake City that he was driving home when he unknowingly crossed into the scene. At first, he thought fireworks were being set off, until his car was struck by a bullet.

“I went to go back out, and when I did, a bullet went through the driver’s side door and out my windshield,” Kilman recalled. “So I pulled over, ran home, and called my wife to make sure I didn’t have any holes in me. It was pretty freaky.”

Community Mourning and Support

The deaths of the two Tremonton Garland officers mark one of the deadliest nights for law enforcement in Utah in recent years. Flags across Box Elder County are expected to be lowered in their honor, and local officials said support services are being offered to families of the victims.

Neighboring police departments expressed condolences on social media, underscoring the risks officers face daily in responding to domestic disturbance calls—often considered among the most unpredictable and dangerous for law enforcement.

Governor Spencer Cox also released a statement pledging state support for the families and communities affected. “Our hearts are broken,” Cox said, calling the officers’ sacrifice “a solemn reminder of the courage and dedication of Utah’s law enforcement.”

Continuing Investigation

Authorities are continuing to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deadly shooting. Investigators are reviewing 911 call records, gathering witness statements, and examining the suspect’s background.

While the suspect remains in custody, prosecutors are expected to announce formal charges in the coming days. Police have urged the public to allow investigators time to complete their work while honoring the fallen officers’ service.

Tragedy in Idaho: Man Who Sparked Wildfire Fatally Shoots Two Firefighters After Parking Dispute

In a heartbreaking and shocking turn of events, two veteran firefighters were shot and killed—and a third critically wounded—after responding to a wildfire on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Sunday. Authorities say the gunman was a 20-year-old transient who turned violent when firefighters asked him to move his parked vehicle.

A Simple Request Turns Deadly

According to Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris, the man—identified as Wess Roley—had started the fire using a flint. When firefighters arrived to contain the blaze, they asked Roley to relocate his vehicle. Instead, he opened fire.

“These firefighters were responding to protect the public,” Norris said during a press conference. “They never expected to come under attack.”

The confrontation forced first responders to take cover behind fire trucks. Authorities later discovered that Roley took his own life in the nearby mountains, his weapon found beside him.

The Fallen Heroes

The community is mourning the loss of two highly respected public servants:

Frank Harwood, 42, a battalion chief with Kootenai County Fire and Rescue, served 17 years and was an Army National Guard veteran. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

John Morrison, 52, a battalion chief with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, had dedicated 28 years to the department.

A third firefighter, David Tysdal, 47, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and remains in critical condition following two successful surgeries.

A City in Shock

“This is not Idaho,” said Governor Brad Little, who ordered flags across the state to fly at half-staff in honor of the fallen. “We have never seen a heinous act of violence like this on our firefighters before.”

The outpouring of grief was swift. That same day, residents lined Interstate 90, waving American flags as the firefighters’ bodies were transported to Spokane for autopsy.

Fire Chief Christopher Way said the department is shaken but focused on safety. Local police have since committed to accompany firefighters on calls until further notice.

“I don’t know that we can restore peace of mind right away,” Way said, “but we’re doing everything we can to protect our people.”

Who Was the Shooter?

Roley, described by authorities as a transient with past ties to California and Arizona, had been living in Idaho for much of 2024. He was reportedly living out of his vehicle near the mountain and had previously expressed interest in becoming a firefighter.

Though he had only minor interactions with local law enforcement, several warning signs emerged in recent months. A former roommate, T.J. Franks Jr., said Roley began exhibiting erratic behavior—shaving his head, acting paranoid, and even throwing gang signs at security cameras in their apartment.

Franks eventually called police out of concern, and said Roley appeared to be in a mental health decline.

“We just kind of noticed him starting to go downhill,” Franks recalled.

Tactical Response and Ongoing Fire Danger

After the shooting, law enforcement launched a large-scale manhunt. FBI teams used cellphone tracking to locate Roley while helicopters with snipers stood by, ready to neutralize the threat if necessary. A shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents.

Roley was later found dead in the mountains, along with his firearm.

Meanwhile, the fire he started burned through about 26 acres before being mostly contained. Officials say the threat is under control, but some risk remains. “We’ve stopped significant forward progress,” said Fire Chief Way.

A Community Forever Changed

For the 55,000 residents of Coeur d’Alene, this tragedy cuts deep. A senseless act of violence has robbed two families of loved ones and shaken the trust in what is usually a routine act of public service.

“These firefighters ran toward danger—only to be met with a gun,” said Sheriff Norris. “It’s an unimaginable loss for our entire community.”

Authorities arrested Morphew on Friday in Arizona, days after a Colorado grand jury returned a fresh indictment. He’s being held on a $3 million cash-only bond, with prosecutors working to return him to Colorado.

Suzanne’s disappearance captured national attention after she went missing near Salida, Colorado, leaving behind only a mountain bike and helmet found in different locations — with no signs of a crash. For years, questions swirled, suspicions mounted, and court battles raged. Now, with her body finally recovered and new forensic evidence in hand, prosecutors say they’re ready to try again.

“We have worked very hard to move forward in this case,” said District Attorney Anne Kelly. “We never gave up on getting justice for Suzanne.”

Suzanne’s Remains Found — and a Disturbing Drug Discovery

In September 2023, agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation found Suzanne’s skeletal remains in a shallow grave near Moffat, a remote area roughly 40 miles south of the Morphews’ home. Her bones were severely bleached — likely by sun exposure — and a port used for chemotherapy treatment suggested the remains were hers.

More disturbingly, toxicology testing revealed something unexpected: traces of a powerful sedative cocktail known as BAM, a tranquilizer typically used for wildlife. Forensic experts found all three components of the drug — butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine — in her bones, and ruled out contamination after death.

A forensic anthropologist theorized that Suzanne’s body may have decomposed elsewhere before being moved, adding to the mystery.

The final autopsy classified her death as homicide by unspecified means, with drug-induced intoxication suspected.

Barry Morphew and the Tranquilizer Connection

According to the indictment, Barry Morphew had access to BAM — and was the only private individual in that area of Colorado documented to possess it.

As a former deer farmer in Indiana, Morphew had filled multiple BAM prescriptions before the couple relocated to Colorado in 2018. In that part of the state, only wildlife officials were authorized to have the drug. None reported any missing supplies.

“Ultimately, the prescription records show that when Suzanne Morphew disappeared, only one private citizen living in that entire area of the state had access to BAM: Barry Morphew,” prosecutors stated.

Investigators also found a tranquilizer gun and related gear in the Morphews’ home.

A Troubled History: Charges Dropped, Evidence Withheld

This isn’t the first time Barry Morphew has been charged in connection with Suzanne’s death.

In May 2021, he was initially arrested and charged with murder — but the case fell apart just before trial. A judge dismissed the charges after prosecutors repeatedly failed to turn over key evidence, including DNA from an unidentified male found in Suzanne’s SUV. Some of that evidence could have supported Morphew’s defense.

The judge allowed for charges to be refiled later. Prosecutors claimed at the time they needed more time to locate Suzanne’s body.

Since then, Barry Morphew filed a $15 million lawsuit, accusing investigators and prosecutors of violating his constitutional rights. He also sought disciplinary action against the original legal team for allegedly withholding evidence.

Iris Eytan, Morphew’s former defense attorney, said prosecutors “fumbled” the case. “Not only is he a loving father,” she told AP, “but he was a loving husband.”

A Plea, a Disappearance, and a Tangled Timeline

Suzanne Morphew, a 49-year-old mother of two, vanished on Mother’s Day 2020. Her bike was found near their home in Chaffee County, and her helmet was discovered separately — both placed in ways that raised suspicions of staging.

One week later, Barry posted a video on Facebook, tearfully pleading for her return:

“No questions asked. However much they want, I will do whatever it takes to get you back.”

But investigators soon found inconsistencies. Barry, an avid hunter, originally said he drove straight to work that morning. Later, he admitted detouring through the area where Suzanne’s helmet was discovered — allegedly because he saw an elk cross the road.

The arrest affidavit also revealed that Suzanne had allegedly planned to leave her husband. Prosecutors pointed to erratic statements and behavioral red flags in the months leading up to her disappearance.

Legal Fallout: A Disbarred Prosecutor and Renewed Scrutiny

The first attempt to prosecute Barry Morphew had long-lasting consequences.

Linda Stanley, the former district attorney who led the initial case, was later disbarred, in part due to her mishandling of the investigation. A state panel cited her for making inappropriate public comments and for poor case management that undermined the trial.

Now, with a new district attorney and the discovery of Suzanne’s remains, prosecutors are moving forward once more — hoping this time the evidence will stick.

Barry Morphew continues to insist he is innocent. His current attorney, David Beller, blasted the new indictment, accusing prosecutors of bias.

“Yet again, the government allows their predetermined conclusion to lead their search for evidence,” Beller said. “Barry maintains his innocence. The case has not changed — and the outcome will not either.”

Kneecap Rapper Mo Chara Released on Bail After Terror Charge Over Hezbollah Flag at London Gig

LONDON — Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, better known as Mo Chara of the Irish-language hip-hop group Kneecap, has been released on unconditional bail following a court appearance in London on a terrorism-related charge.

The 27-year-old artist is accused of displaying a flag associated with the proscribed group Hezbollah during a recent Kneecap performance in the city. He was formally charged under the anglicized name Liam O’Hanna and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, flanked by bandmates Móglaí Bap (Naoise Ó Cairealláin) and DJ Próvaí (JJ Ó Dochartaigh).

Packed Courtroom, Strong Support

The courtroom was filled to capacity, with extra chairs brought in to accommodate journalists. Among those in attendance were representatives from Irish language advocacy groups and Sinn Féin MPs John Finucane and Paul Maskey.

Outside, the show of solidarity was impossible to miss. Supporters applauded as the group exited the courthouse, while others waved Palestinian flags and banners emblazoned with the messages “Free Speech, Free Palestine” and “Free Mo Chara.” The band members themselves arrived wearing T-shirts reading “Free Mo Chara.”

One van that passed by bore a striking slogan: “More Blacks, More Dogs, More Irish, Mo Chara” — a defiant twist on a notorious discriminatory phrase from 1950s Britain, now reimagined in support of the rapper.

Kneecap later claimed responsibility for covering parts of London with supportive messages ahead of the hearing.

What’s Next in the Case?

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring set the next court date for August 20, telling Ó hAnnaidh he must attend. He also noted that court officials had attempted to secure an Irish language interpreter for the hearing, but “we couldn’t find one.”

Kneecap has issued a public denial of the charge via social media, stating: “We deny this ‘offence’ and will vehemently defend ourselves.”

Who Are Kneecap?

Formed in 2017, Kneecap is a Belfast-based rap trio known for mixing Irish language with politically charged lyrics, provocative imagery, and a rebellious spirit. The members — Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí — have made headlines for their controversial performances, outspoken views, and unapologetically anti-establishment stance.

They’ve also made waves in the entertainment world: a semi-fictionalized film based on the group, starring Michael Fassbender, won a BAFTA in February 2025.

Controversy is nothing new to the group. At Coachella in April, they made headlines for highlighting the war in Gaza during their set. And back in November 2024, they successfully challenged a UK government decision by then-minister Kemi Badenoch to strip them of an arts grant.

Third Night of Unrest in Northern Ireland as Tensions Escalate in Ballymena and Larne

Northern Ireland is grappling with a third consecutive night of unrest, as violence flared again Wednesday night in the towns of Ballymena and Larne. What began as local outrage over a serious criminal case has spiraled into racially charged riots, prompting a heavy police response and raising concerns about deepening community tensions.

Violence Spreads to Larne

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show masked youths setting fire to a leisure center in Larne after smashing its windows. While Reuters has not yet verified the footage, the images reflect the growing volatility spreading beyond Ballymena.

Ballymena: The Epicenter of the Riots

The unrest began in Ballymena—about 45 kilometers (28 miles) northwest of Belfast—after two 14-year-old boys were arrested and charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl. According to the BBC, the charges were read in court with the assistance of a Romanian interpreter, and the boys’ lawyer said they deny the allegations.

In the aftermath of their court appearance, what may have started as a community’s outrage quickly morphed into violence. Police say the resulting riots, which included attacks on homes and cars, have taken on a disturbing racial tone. Authorities are investigating the incidents as racially motivated hate crimes.

Police Under Siege

Over the course of the last two nights, more than 30 police officers have been injured as hundreds of masked individuals clashed with law enforcement. On Wednesday night, around 200 people gathered in Ballymena as riot police blocked roads with armored vans. A Reuters journalist on the ground reported rocks being thrown at police vehicles, with one individual seen kicking a van.

Officers issued warnings over loudspeakers, telling the crowd to disperse and cautioning that force would be used against “violent individuals” if necessary.

Authorities Condemn “Racist Thuggery”

Police have strongly condemned the violence, labeling it as “racist thuggery” and urging the public to help restore calm. The events mark a troubling return to scenes of disorder not seen at this scale in recent years, raising fears about simmering social tensions and the challenges of maintaining peace in the region.

As investigations continue, both the justice system and local communities face the daunting task of addressing not only the original criminal case but also the wave of chaos it has unleashed.
