A 29-year-old man accused of starting the deadly Palisades Fire, one of the most destructive wildfires in California’s history, has pleaded not guilty to federal arson charges.

Jonathan Rinderknecht appeared in a Los Angeles federal courtroom on Thursday after being extradited from Florida earlier in the day. Prosecutors allege he sparked a smaller blaze that later reignited into the massive fire that devastated communities across Pacific Palisades and Malibu in early January.

Federal Charges and Detention

During the hearing, a U.S. magistrate judge ordered Rinderknecht to remain in custody pending trial. His attorney, Steve Haney, requested bail, citing a lack of criminal history and arguing that court officials in Florida had previously recommended release. The judge denied the request, echoing earlier concerns from a Florida magistrate about the defendant’s mental health and reliability to appear in court.

Rinderknecht appeared in court wearing a white jumpsuit and at one point asked to speak, saying, “Can I actually say something about detainment?” before being directed to remain silent.

According to court records, Rinderknecht faces multiple federal counts, including arson affecting property used in interstate commerce and timber set afire. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison. His trial is scheduled for December 16.

Origin of the Fire

Federal investigators allege that Rinderknecht ignited a small brush fire on New Year’s Day, known as the Lachman Fire, which burned underground before flaring up again nearly a week later. That flare-up allegedly evolved into the Palisades Fire, which raged across Los Angeles County beginning January 7.

The inferno killed 12 people in hillside neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades and Malibu and destroyed more than 17,000 homes and buildings. It was one of two major blazes that broke out that week, collectively leaving more than 30 dead and marking one of the deadliest wildfire events in modern California history.

Authorities described the Palisades blaze as a “holdover fire” — a fire that continued smoldering below ground before reigniting. A criminal complaint noted that Rinderknecht had made several 911 calls to report the smaller fire days before it flared up again.

Defense Argues Misattribution

Attorney Steve Haney disputed the prosecution’s theory, arguing that Rinderknecht is being unfairly charged for the larger Palisades Fire when he allegedly ignited only the smaller Lachman Fire.

“My client is being charged with a fire that started seven days after,” Haney told the court, adding that several “intervening factors” — including actions by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) — contributed to the later disaster.

Haney contended that firefighters failed to fully extinguish the initial fire, despite multiple emergency calls from Rinderknecht. The defense maintains that lingering embers in underground root systems may have reignited due to environmental conditions rather than deliberate action.

Officials Cite Deep-Rooted Fire Hazards

Fire officials have said such holdover fires can burn undetected for days beneath the surface. Los Angeles’ interim fire chief explained that underground fires can burrow 15 to 20 feet (4.6 to over 6 meters) deep, sometimes beyond the reach of standard firefighting tools and thermal imaging cameras.

“They had a duty to put the fire out,” Haney told reporters after the hearing. “I do think he’s a scapegoat.”

The defense plans to submit new evidence supporting Rinderknecht’s bail request, arguing that he cooperated with authorities and poses no flight risk.

Background and Arrest

Rinderknecht, who previously lived in the Pacific Palisades area, was arrested in Orlando, Florida, on October 7 by federal agents. He was staying at his sister’s home at the time. The following day, he made his first court appearance in Florida on a charge of malicious destruction by means of fire before being transferred to Los Angeles.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California has not commented beyond confirming the charges and ongoing investigation.

Prosecutors allege that Rinderknecht acted alone, though they have not disclosed a possible motive. Officials said the Palisades Fire remains under federal review as part of a broader wildfire prevention and accountability initiative.

Wider Context: California’s Fire Crisis

California continues to experience an increasing frequency of catastrophic wildfires, driven by prolonged drought, high winds, and rising temperatures linked to climate change. The Palisades Fire’s devastation renewed debate over forest management, firefighting resources, and accountability in fire-prone regions.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) reported that more than 1.2 million acres have burned statewide so far this year, a significant rise over the previous five-year average. Federal and state agencies have since launched joint task forces to address wildfire mitigation and early detection.

Next Steps

Rinderknecht’s legal team is expected to file new motions ahead of his December trial, including requests for bail reconsideration and potential challenges to the scope of federal charges. The court has not yet ruled on whether the smaller Lachman Fire and the subsequent Palisades Fire will be treated as separate or connected events in the indictment.

For the families who lost homes and loved ones in the blaze, the trial represents one step toward accountability in a state grappling with increasingly deadly fire seasons.

Deadly Palisades Fire Linked to Suspect’s Alleged Actions on New Year’s Day

Published: October 9, 2025, 21:45 EDT

Federal authorities have charged a 29-year-old man with starting the Palisades Fire, one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history. The blaze tore through affluent hillside neighborhoods in Pacific Palisades and Malibu, leaving 12 people dead and destroying thousands of homes across Los Angeles County.

Prosecutors Detail Timeline of Fire’s Origins

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Jonathan Rinderknecht, a local resident, allegedly ignited a small fire on January 1, 2024, that smoldered underground for several days before reigniting nearly a week later. The renewed flames rapidly spread through dry brush and strong winds, creating the catastrophic Palisades Fire.

Authorities said the incident was one of two major blazes that erupted on January 7, killing more than 30 people in total and leveling over 17,000 homes and structures.

Arrest and Court Appearance in Florida

The suspect was arrested Tuesday in Orlando, Florida, and appeared in federal court the following day. He faces charges including malicious destruction by means of fire, a felony that carries a minimum prison sentence of five years.

During the brief hearing, the accused appeared calm and told the magistrate that he was not under the influence and did not have any mental health issues. A bond and extradition hearing is set for October 17.

Messages seeking comment from Aziza Hawthorne, the federal public defender representing him, were not immediately returned.

Fire Department Faces Scrutiny Over Emergency Response

Los Angeles Fire Department Interim Chief Ronnie Villanueva called the arrest “an important step toward accountability” and said the department continues to examine lessons from the fire.

A department report released Wednesday revealed that firefighters lacked adequate resources and clear communication during the first 36 hours of the blaze, hampering containment efforts. Despite weather warnings of extreme winds, officials did not pre-deploy enough personnel or equipment.

The report also noted delays in evacuation alerts, with some residents fleeing without official instructions, resulting in gridlock that blocked emergency routes.

Suspect’s Movements and Alleged Actions Before the Blaze

Investigators said the suspect had been working as an Uber driver on New Year’s Eve 2024. After dropping off a passenger near a Pacific Palisades trailhead, he allegedly walked up a hillside, listened to a rap song depicting fire imagery, and set a small blaze shortly after midnight.

Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated that the man returned to the site later that night to watch firefighters battle the flames. “He left when he saw fire trucks heading to the scene but then went back and recorded video of the firefighting efforts,” Essayli said.

Uber confirmed in a statement that it cooperated with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to track the driver’s movements during the time of the fire.

911 Calls and Online Searches Raise Further Questions

According to the federal complaint, the accused made several 911 calls reporting the fire and later provided investigators with details about its origin that were not yet public. During questioning on January 24, he appeared anxious and provided misleading information about his location.

Authorities also cited evidence suggesting that the suspect had searched online about whether a cigarette could start a wildfire, allegedly seeking to frame the blaze as an accident.

Investigators Trace Cause to ‘Holdover Fire’

Federal officials described the Palisades Fire as a “holdover fire,” meaning it continued to smolder underground after the initial January 1 blaze. Such fires can persist in root systems up to 20 feet deep, often undetectable even with thermal imaging.

Investigators said a lighter was likely used to ignite dry vegetation or paper. They later recovered a “barbecue-style” lighter from the suspect’s car that matched one seen in his possession days before the fire.

Legal Experts Weigh Challenges for Prosecutors

Legal analysts noted that federal prosecutors must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the January 7 inferno stemmed directly from the smaller New Year’s Day blaze.

“Establishing that causal link is critical,” said Jerod Gunsberg, a California criminal defense attorney familiar with arson cases. “It’s one thing to show negligence or recklessness, but proving intent and continuity between two fire events will be complex.”

LAFD’s Review Cites Operational Gaps

The fire department’s internal review acknowledged that early response delays contributed to the fire’s spread. Some off-duty firefighters could not be recalled promptly, and several supervisors lacked experience managing an incident of such scale. Many crews reportedly worked over 36 hours without rest.

The first evacuation orders came approximately 40 minutes after homes were already burning, according to independent reporting by The Associated Press.

Second Fire Investigation Still Ongoing

The same day the Palisades Fire erupted, another major blaze — the Eaton Fire — ignited in the community of Altadena, killing 19 people and destroying more than 9,400 homes.

Federal investigators have not yet determined its cause, though the U.S. government filed a lawsuit against Southern California Edison, alleging that its equipment may have sparked the flames.

A separate review commissioned by Los Angeles County supervisors in September found that outdated alert systems and inconsistent emergency policies delayed evacuation warnings.

Source: AP News –Man charged with sparking the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles history

Published: September-29-2025, 14:00 EDT

Tragedy Strikes During Sunday Worship

Authorities have confirmed that four people were killed and eight others injured after a violent attack at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan. The assault occurred Sunday morning during services when a man drove his truck into the church, opened fire, and set the building ablaze.

Officials feared additional victims might be inside the burned structure, but a full police sweep on Monday determined that everyone had been accounted for. The incident has shocked the community and drawn national attention as investigators search for answers.

Attack Unfolds in Chaotic Moments

According to Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye, the suspect, a 40-year-old former U.S. Marine, crashed his pickup truck into the church before firing at congregants and igniting the building. Panic erupted as worshippers scrambled to escape, while some members bravely helped others to safety through heavy smoke.

“This was an evil act of violence,” Renye stated during a press briefing, emphasizing the deliberate nature of the assault.

Victims and Survivors

The shooting left four worshippers dead and eight others injured, ranging in age from 6 to 78 years old. Despite the severity of the attack, all wounded victims are expected to survive, according to police. Two additional individuals were treated for smoke inhalation.

Local hospitals have reported that the injured are in stable condition and receiving medical care. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending family notifications.

The assailant was killed during an exchange of gunfire with two responding police officers inside the church. Chief Renye confirmed that officers acted swiftly to confront the attacker and prevent further loss of life.

Investigators said the man appeared to have deliberately targeted the congregation, though his exact motives remain unclear. Federal and state law enforcement are working together to piece together the suspect’s background and possible intentions.

Ruben Coleman, the FBI’s special agent in charge of the case, described the tragedy as an “act of targeted violence.” He noted that this marks the second attack on an American church in just over a month, raising concerns about the safety of religious institutions nationwide.

Federal officials are assisting local police in collecting evidence from the scene and examining potential online activity or communications from the suspect.
Broader Concerns Over Church Safety

Sunday’s attack comes amid growing fears about violence targeting houses of worship in the United States. Religious leaders have renewed calls for stronger security measures and cooperation with law enforcement to protect congregations during services.

While the FBI has labeled the incident as targeted, authorities have cautioned against speculation until the investigation is complete. Officials have promised to provide updates as new information emerges.

Pat Tillman’s Brother Arrested After Fiery Crash Into San Jose Post Office

Authorities in San Jose, California, are investigating a bizarre early-morning crash after a car slammed into a post office and started a fire. The driver, identified as Richard Tillman — the brother of former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger Pat Tillman — has been arrested on suspicion of arson. The incident is now under federal investigation due to the nature of the crash and signs of possible vandalism.

Car Crashes Into San Jose Post Office, Sparks Fire

Just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, emergency crews in San Jose responded to a fire at the Almaden Valley Station Post Office. According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, a vehicle had crashed into the building’s box lobby area and caught fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and fortunately, no one was hurt. But the cause of the crash — and the reason behind it — is still unclear.

Driver Identified as Richard Tillman

The driver was arrested at the scene and later identified as Richard Tillman, 44, the younger brother of Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman was a former NFL star who left football to join the U.S. Army after the 9/11 attacks. He died in Afghanistan in 2004 due to friendly fire.

Richard Tillman was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of arson, police said.

Investigators Looking Into Vandalism and Livestream

Federal postal investigators are now digging deeper. According to ABC News, officials are investigating reports that the car crash may have been livestreamed by the driver.

Sources also said that spray-painted words were found on the outside of the building, though it’s not yet known whether the graffiti is directly connected to the crash.

There is no confirmation yet if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.

No Comment From Pat Tillman Foundation

ABC News reached out to the Pat Tillman Foundation for a statement or comment from the Tillman family, but there has been no public response so far.

The foundation, which honors Pat Tillman’s legacy, focuses on supporting veterans and military families through education and leadership development.

Federal Investigation Underway

Because the crash involved a U.S. government facility, the case is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the agency responsible for protecting postal workers and property.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted to postal inspectors by calling 877-876-2455.

A Shocking Incident With Unanswered Questions

This is not the first time a vehicle has caused damage to a federal facility, but the connection to someone with a high-profile family name has drawn more attention to the case.

So far, no charges beyond arson have been officially announced, and the investigation is ongoing.

More details are expected to be released as authorities determine what led to the fiery crash and whether any additional charges may be filed.

If you have information that may help the investigation, contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.

New Jersey Wildfire Sparks Outrage: Teen Charged with Arson Over Pine Barrens Blaze

NEW JERSEY — A 19-year-old man has been charged with arson after authorities say he started a bonfire that triggered a massive wildfire in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, spreading smoke as far as New York City and forcing thousands to evacuate.

Joseph Kling of Waretown, NJ, was arrested and charged with arson and aggravated arson after investigators determined that a bonfire he lit using wooden pallets was never fully extinguished. That blaze quickly spiraled into one of the state’s largest wildfires in decades, burning more than 23 square miles and continuing to grow.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, the fire began with an “improperly extinguished bonfire.” Fire towers first spotted the rising smoke on Tuesday morning, and law enforcement used GPS technology to trace the fire’s origin to the burn site.

At a press conference Thursday, Billhimer stated: “We can confidently say that we think the fire was set intentionally.” He declined to provide additional details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Kling appeared in court Thursday, where Judge James Gluck denied his release and scheduled his next hearing for Tuesday. He spoke only briefly, confirming his court date before thanking the judge. A public defender representing him had no comment.

The blaze comes at the peak of wildfire season in the Pine Barrens — a vast, forested area covering more than a million acres. Months of drought, dry conditions, and low humidity have created a tinderbox environment, making the region especially vulnerable to fast-moving fires.

Though much of the Pine Barrens is uninhabited, New Jersey remains the most densely populated state in the U.S. Officials warned that nearby communities were at risk. Approximately 5,000 residents were evacuated but were allowed to return home by Wednesday.

“This is still a very active fire,” said Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette. “While we’ve made progress, we expect the fire to continue growing, mostly in unpopulated areas.”

The fire’s effects have reached well beyond New Jersey. On Thursday, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued air quality alerts for New York City, Long Island, and parts of Westchester and Rockland counties, warning residents of elevated pollution levels.

Symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation, and shortness of breath are expected, and residents were advised to stay indoors to minimize exposure.

New York, like New Jersey, is experiencing high fire risk conditions due to statewide dry weather. Several regions — including the Hudson Valley, Capital Region, and Long Island — are under a high fire danger rating.

Jim and Lenore Thoms, who own a business near the blaze, called it a terrifying experience. “The firefighters were phenomenal, they saved this whole park,” Jim Thoms said. “If they weren’t there, we might have lost everything.”

So far, no injuries or deaths have been reported, though a commercial building and several vehicles were destroyed in the fire.

Acting Governor Tahesha Way declared a state of emergency on Wednesday as fire crews battled to contain the blaze. Officials said Thursday that the wildfire was about 50% contained. Governor Phil Murphy, currently in Poland for a Holocaust memorial visit, is expected to return Friday.

Authorities say this wildfire ranks as the second-largest in New Jersey in recent memory, surpassed only by a 2007 fire that scorched 26 square miles.

The Pine Barrens — wedged between Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore — are particularly prone to fires this time of year. The combination of sandy, fast-draining soil, leafless trees, and steady winds creates ideal conditions for wildfires to spread rapidly.

Footage released by state officials shows dramatic scenes of towering smoke clouds, blazing pine trees, and exhausted crews working to suppress the flames.

Man Accused of Setting Fire to Pennsylvania Governor’s Home Denied Bail

A man accused of setting fire to the home of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has been denied bail, with concerns for both his safety and the security of the Harrisburg community. The 38-year-old, Cody Balmer, faces multiple charges including attempted homicide, aggravated arson, and terrorism, after allegedly breaking into the governor’s residence early Sunday morning and setting the fire using homemade Molotov cocktails.

During his arraignment Monday, Magistrate District Judge Dale Klein recommended that Balmer remain in jail. He did not enter a plea, and his attorney, Colton Whitener, declined to comment on the charges, stating that they would wait for further information.

Balmer, a Harrisburg native, later turned himself in to police. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 23.

Governor Shapiro, his wife Lori, their four children, and another family were forced to evacuate their state-owned residence after the fire, which caused significant damage to the home. The incident occurred just hours after they had hosted a Passover dinner. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

In a disturbing revelation, Balmer admitted to “harboring hatred” for Shapiro and claimed that if he had encountered the governor, he would have beaten him with a hammer. Court records suggest that Balmer was aware Shapiro and his family might have been home when he set the fire, and that the consequences could have been far worse.

Authorities are exploring whether antisemitism played a role in the attack. Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo stated that investigators are looking into whether Balmer’s actions were linked to Shapiro’s religion and his views on Israel, though there is no definitive evidence of this yet. Additionally, mental health concerns are also being considered as a possible factor in the incident.

Balmer’s mother, Christie Balmer, told CBS News that her son had been struggling with mental illness and had stopped taking his medication. She even reached out to police for help, but was unsuccessful in getting him assistance.

Balmer himself denied having a history of mental illness when questioned by the judge, though he acknowledged that his medication may have contributed to his behavior.

Balmer’s actions were methodical and deliberate. After walking about an hour from his home to the governor’s residence, he reportedly climbed over the fence, broke two windows with a hammer, and threw an incendiary device through one of the windows. The fire quickly spread, with Balmer reportedly entering the residence and throwing a second incendiary device. He then kicked down a door and fled the scene.

Despite the quick response from the governor’s security team, Balmer managed to evade capture. State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said, “He clearly had a plan,” pointing out that Balmer’s actions seemed well thought out.

The fire caused significant damage to the governor’s residence, including the piano and dining rooms, as well as destroying furniture. Photos of the aftermath show charred walls and floors covered in ash, with remnants of the Passover dinner, including a “Passover Crafts” sign, scattered around the scene.

The Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence, a historic Georgian-style building overlooking the Susquehanna River, has been home to governors and their families since 1968. The property also houses numerous art exhibits and security measures designed to protect the family at all times.

Despite the trauma of the attack, Governor Shapiro remains resolute. In an emotional press conference, he condemned the violence, calling it an attack not just on his family but on the people of Pennsylvania. He thanked the outpouring of support and prayers from across the political spectrum, including from Vice President JD Vance and Senator John Fetterman.

“This type of violence is not OK,” Shapiro said firmly. “We have to be better than this.” He also vowed that the attack would not deter him from his duties as governor, emphasizing his pride in his Jewish faith and the importance of openly celebrating religious traditions like Passover.

“Rest assured,” Shapiro said, “if this individual was trying to deter me from doing my job as your governor, I will find a way to work even harder than before.” He added that neither he, his family, nor any Pennsylvanian would be intimidated into abandoning their faith or beliefs.

Balmer’s charges could potentially extend to federal offenses as the FBI assists state authorities in the investigation. This incident is part of a larger trend of violent threats against elected officials in the U.S., raising concerns about the growing climate of political violence.

As investigations continue, both law enforcement and the Shapiro family are focusing on ensuring that such an attack never happens again. Meanwhile, Shapiro’s determination to press forward with his work remains unshaken, despite the challenges ahead.

Suspect Arrested After Arson Attack at Governor Shapiro’s Residence During Passover Celebration

Harrisburg, PA — A man was arrested Sunday after breaking into Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence in the early hours and setting a fire that forced the governor, his family, and guests to flee the home. Authorities confirmed the fire caused significant damage but, thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The suspect, identified as Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, faces multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault.

Governor Shapiro, his wife, four children, two dogs, and a visiting family had just finished celebrating Passover when they were awoken around 2 a.m. by state troopers pounding on their doors, urging them to evacuate.

“I refuse to be trapped by the bondage that someone attempts to put on me by attacking us,” said an emotional Shapiro at a press conference later that day. “If [this person] was trying to stop me from doing my job, then I’ll just work harder.”

Authorities say Balmer scaled a 7-foot-high iron fence, evaded officers on the premises, and managed to enter the governor’s mansion. He was reportedly inside for less than a minute, during which time he used a homemade incendiary device to ignite the fire. The blaze began in the very room where the Passover Seder was held hours earlier.

Lt. Col. George Bivens confirmed that the suspect appeared to have carefully planned the attack. Balmer was arrested later in the day near the scene.

The fire tore through the mansion’s south wing, destroying one of the main entertaining spaces. Large windows were blown out, and charred debris—including a burned piano and metal buffet dishes—could be seen inside through broken doors and fire-blackened walls.

State and federal investigators, including from the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire, FBI, and DOJ, were seen combing the site. A portion of the fence was removed as evidence and taken away wrapped in black plastic.

While the motive remains unclear, Shapiro took a firm stand against violence, regardless of political affiliation:

“This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society,” he said. “It is not OK. And it has to stop. We have to be better than this.”

Shapiro received an outpouring of support from fellow leaders and political figures:

Vice President JD Vance condemned the “disgusting violence,” expressing relief that the Shapiro family was unharmed.

Former Gov. Mark Schweiker called the attack a “despicable act of cowardice.”

Former Gov. Tom Ridge described the images of the damage as “heartbreaking” and said the perpetrator must be “held to account.”

Shapiro, who is seen as a potential Democratic contender for the 2028 presidential race, has split time between the governor’s mansion and his family’s home in Abington, about 100 miles east.

As the investigation continues, officials are calling the incident a deeply troubling breach of security and an attack on public service itself.
