CAIRO — Renewed fighting in central Sudan has forced around 2,000 people to flee their homes in just three days, the United Nations migration agency (IOM) said Monday, as the country’s devastating conflict enters its third year with no sign of resolution.

The IOM reported that civilians fled from several towns and villages near Bara in North Kordofan province between Friday and Sunday, amid escalating clashes between the Sudanese army and the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

North Kordofan and the neighboring Darfur region have become the latest epicenters of Sudan’s war, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions since it erupted in April 2023.

Escalating Violence and Mass Displacement

The IOM said that nearly 39,000 people have fled from multiple towns in North Kordofan since October 26, following a series of RSF attacks. Most displaced residents are heading toward Khartoum, Omdurman, and Sheikan, seeking safety despite ongoing instability in those areas.

The violence in Kordofan follows the RSF’s capture of el-Fasher, the last major city in Darfur not under its control. The takeover left hundreds dead and forced tens of thousands to flee to overcrowded camps amid reports of mass atrocities, according to aid groups and U.N. officials.

The World Health Organization estimates that at least 40,000 people have been killed and 12 million displaced since the conflict began, though humanitarian groups warn the real toll could be far higher.

Mass Killings and Cover-Ups in Darfur

In Darfur, reports of war crimes continue to mount. The Sudan Doctors Network said Sunday that RSF fighters collected hundreds of bodies from the streets of el-Fasher, burying some in mass graves and burning others in what the group described as an effort to conceal evidence of atrocities.

Satellite images analyzed by Vantor, a Colorado-based firm, appear to confirm these reports. Images taken last week showed fires burning near the Saudi Hospital in el-Fasher, close to what analysts identified as a cluster of possible human remains.

Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab said the images likely depict “the burning of objects that may be consistent with bodies.”

Attacks Spread to West Kordofan

Meanwhile, the RSF claimed Monday that its fighters had entered Babanusa, a strategic town in West Kordofan province, and were advancing toward the army’s regional headquarters.

Local volunteer Salah Semsaya, part of the Emergency Response Rooms network, told the Associated Press that aid kitchens in Babanusa had seen a sharp decline in families seeking food, suggesting many residents have fled. However, official displacement figures have not been confirmed.

A Nation in Collapse

Sudan’s war began after tensions erupted between Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, head of the army, and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), commander of the RSF — former allies who jointly seized power in a 2021 coup.

Their power struggle has since plunged Sudan into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, leaving large parts of the country without functioning government institutions, food supplies, or medical services.

Despite repeated calls from the United Nations, African Union, and regional mediators for a cease-fire, both sides continue to fight for territorial control, especially over resource-rich and strategic regions such as Darfur and Kordofan.

Netanyahu Threatens to Resume Fighting in Gaza if Hostages Are Not Released by Saturday

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Israel will withdraw from the Gaza ceasefire and resume military operations against Hamas if the militant group does not release more hostages by Saturday. Netanyahu has ordered Israeli forces to prepare for renewed combat should Hamas fail to comply.

Hamas Accuses Israel of Violating Ceasefire Terms

Hamas announced on Monday—and reiterated on Tuesday—that it would delay releasing three additional hostages, accusing Israel of breaching the ceasefire agreement. The group claims Israel has failed to permit the agreed-upon amount of humanitarian aid, including tents and supplies, into Gaza.

Trump Casts Doubt on Ceasefire’s Durability

U.S. President Donald Trump, after meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House on Tuesday, questioned whether Hamas would meet the deadline to release the remaining hostages.

“I don’t think they’re going to make the deadline, personally,” Trump said. “They want to play tough guy. We’ll see how tough they are.”

Since the ceasefire began, Hamas has released 21 hostages in five separate exchanges for over 730 Palestinian prisoners. The next phase of the agreement calls for the release of all remaining hostages and an indefinite extension of the ceasefire. However, Trump’s remarks about the hostage releases and the future of Gaza have heightened tensions.

Netanyahu’s Stance and Military Readiness

It remains unclear whether Netanyahu’s ultimatum applies only to the three hostages set for release on Saturday or all remaining captives. His office, however, welcomed Trump’s firm stance.

An anonymous Israeli official stated that Israel is aligned with Trump’s position: all hostages must be freed by Saturday. In response, Netanyahu has ordered the Israeli military to mobilize troops around the Gaza Strip, preparing for possible scenarios should the ceasefire collapse.

Hamas Dismisses Trump’s Threats

Trump has insisted that Israel should cancel the ceasefire altogether if all 70 remaining hostages are not released by Saturday. Hamas, however, has dismissed his ultimatum, arguing that Israel has already violated the agreement.

“Trump must remember there is an agreement that must be respected by both parties. This is the only way to bring back prisoners,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri stated Tuesday. “The language of threats has no value; it only complicates matters.”

Hamas later condemned Trump’s remarks, accusing him of advocating for “ethnic cleansing” and attempting to “liquidate the Palestinian cause.” While the group reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire, it did not directly address its decision to pause hostage releases.

Jordan Faces Pressure Amid U.S. Middle East Strategy

Trump met with King Abdullah II in Washington, where he intensified pressure on Jordan to accept refugees from Gaza—potentially as a permanent resettlement plan.

“We’re not going to buy anything. We’re going to have it,” Trump said about U.S. influence over Gaza, as King Abdullah stood beside him.

When pressed about Trump’s vision for the Middle East, the Jordanian king did not provide specific comments. He also avoided responding to suggestions that Jordan could take in a large number of Palestinian refugees. However, he did state that Jordan is willing to accept up to 2,000 seriously ill children from Gaza for medical treatment.

The Uncertain Future of the Ceasefire

Under the ceasefire’s first phase, Hamas agreed to release 33 hostages taken during its October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, while Israel pledged to free nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Since January 19, five prisoner swaps have taken place.

If no agreement is reached for the second phase, the war could resume by early March. However, the battlefield dynamics have changed. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, initially displaced to southern Gaza, have since returned to their homes, complicating potential Israeli military operations.

With tensions escalating and the ceasefire on the brink of collapse, the coming days will be critical in determining whether negotiations continue or if the conflict reignites.

Syrians Returning to Tel Rifaat Face Ruins and Hidden Tunnels

A Painful Homecoming

For the long-displaced residents of Tel Rifaat, Syria, returning home after nearly a decade was meant to be a moment of relief. Instead, they have been met with devastation—homes reduced to rubble, streets lined with destruction, and a town still bearing the deep scars of war.

Tel Rifaat, a key battleground in northern Syria, has been caught in the crossfire of multiple conflicts, most notably between Syrian Kurdish forces and Turkish-backed armed groups. Years of fighting, shifting control, and forced displacements have left the town in ruins.

A Town Caught in Cycles of War and Displacement

2016: Syrian Kurdish forces took control of Tel Rifaat, forcing many residents to flee.

Afrin Crisis: When Turkish-backed forces seized Afrin, many displaced Kurdish residents fled to Tel Rifaat.

December 2023: In a rapid offensive, Turkish-backed Syrian rebels took Tel Rifaat from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), once again shifting control.

Now, those who have returned to reclaim their homes are confronted with a new, unexpected discovery—an underground tunnel network beneath the town.

A Hidden Underground World

During the years of SDF control, a vast network of tunnels was built beneath homes, schools, and public buildings for military purposes. Local authorities say these tunnels have weakened the structures above, causing walls to crack and buildings to sit on unstable foundations.

Rebuilding efforts are made even harder by the town’s fragile infrastructure. Many returning families find their homes in complete disrepair:

Doors hang off broken hinges.

Walls bear the marks of war and neglect.

Rooms have been stripped of essentials—wiring, plumbing, and even furniture.

Signs of hurried departures and past battles are everywhere: scattered debris, abandoned belongings, and makeshift barricades hastily taken down.

Barriers and Broken Infrastructure

On the outskirts of Tel Rifaat, a massive concrete wall—once built as a military barrier by the SDF—now cuts through the town, blocking access to farmland.

Basic services remain virtually non-functional:

Water and electricity networks barely work.

Public services are limited or nonexistent.

A Determined Effort to Rebuild

Despite the destruction, the people of Tel Rifaat remain resilient. Many are already working to clear the rubble and piece their lives back together.

Their return is not just about reclaiming lost homes—it’s about restoring a town that has been trapped in cycles of war for over a decade.

Now, the challenge remains: Can Tel Rifaat rebuild, or will it remain another casualty of Syria’s long and brutal conflict?

Trump Hosts Jordan’s King Amid Pressure Over Gaza Resettlement Plan

White House Meeting as Trump Pushes Controversial Middle East Strategy

President Donald Trump will host Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House on Tuesday as he intensifies pressure on Jordan to accept refugees from Gaza—potentially on a permanent basis. The meeting comes as part of Trump’s broader, ambitious vision to reshape the Middle East.

The visit coincides with growing tensions over the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas, accusing Israel of violating the truce, has announced a pause in hostage releases. Meanwhile, Trump has urged Israel to resume military action if remaining hostages are not freed by the weekend.

Trump’s Vision: U.S. Control Over Gaza and Regional Resettlement

Trump has proposed that the U.S. take control of Gaza and transform it into “the Riviera of the Middle East.” Under his plan, Palestinians in the war-ravaged territory would be relocated to neighboring countries, with no right to return.

On Monday, Trump suggested he might use financial leverage to push Jordan and Egypt—both longtime U.S. allies and top recipients of American foreign aid—into accepting displaced Palestinians.

“Yeah, maybe. Sure, why not?” Trump told reporters when asked if he would withhold aid. “If they don’t, I would conceivably withhold aid, yes.”

However, Jordan has firmly rejected the proposal. The country, already home to more than two million Palestinians, has repeatedly voiced opposition to any forced resettlement.

Jordan and Egypt Firmly Oppose Resettlement Plan

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi reaffirmed last week that his country’s stance remains “firm and unwavering.” Like Jordan, Egypt has also expressed strong concerns about security risks associated with absorbing large numbers of refugees, even on a temporary basis.

When pressed on how he planned to convince King Abdullah to accept Palestinians, Trump responded optimistically:

“I do think he’ll take, and I think other countries will take also. They have good hearts.”

High-Stakes Talks with Trump Administration Officials

During his visit, King Abdullah is set to meet with top Trump administration officials, including:

Secretary of State Marco Rubio

National Security Adviser Mike Waltz

Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth

He is the third foreign leader to meet with Trump in person since the president’s inauguration on January 20.

Trump’s Bold Strategy Faces Scrutiny

Trump first introduced his plan for Gaza during a press conference last week alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While initially open to deploying U.S. troops for security, Trump ruled out using American funds for Gaza’s reconstruction, raising questions about the feasibility of his vision.

Following Trump’s remarks, Rubio and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that the president’s intent was for Palestinians to be relocated “temporarily.” They emphasized an “interim” phase focused on clearing debris, removing unexploded ordnance, and rebuilding key infrastructure.

However, in an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier on Monday, Trump gave a blunt answer when asked if Palestinians in Gaza would have a right to return:

“No, they wouldn’t.”

What’s Next?

With King Abdullah standing firm against Trump’s plan, the White House meeting is expected to be tense. The coming days will determine whether Trump’s strategy gains traction—or faces continued resistance from Arab allies.

Trump Calls Gaza a ‘Big Real Estate Site,’ Doubles Down on Redevelopment Plans

Former President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial plan to redevelop Gaza, describing the war-torn enclave as a “big real estate site” and suggesting that the United States should take control of the area.

Trump’s Vision for Gaza

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Trump defended his position:

“I think it’s a big mistake to allow people—the Palestinians, or the people living in Gaza—to go back yet another time. We don’t want Hamas going back. Think of it as a big real estate site, and the United States is going to own it. We’ll slowly—very slowly, we’re in no rush—develop it. We’re going to bring stability to the Middle East soon.”

Trump, a former real estate mogul, compared Gaza to a demolition site, saying it would be “leveled out” and “fixed up”. He also suggested that other Middle Eastern nations should house displaced Palestinians in “beautiful sites.”

Netanyahu Backs Trump’s Proposal

Trump first introduced the idea last Tuesday during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating:

“The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too.”

He later described his vision of Gaza as a new ‘Riviera.’

Netanyahu has since praised the plan, calling it a “revolutionary, creative vision” for the post-war future of Gaza.

“For a whole year, we’ve been told that in the ‘day after,’ we need the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) in Gaza, the Palestinian Authority,” Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting on Sunday.

“President Trump came with a completely different vision, much better for the state of Israel. A revolutionary, creative vision—and we are discussing it. He is very determined to implement it. This also opens up many possibilities for us.”

Backlash from Palestinian and Regional Leaders

Unsurprisingly, Trump’s remarks have been met with strong opposition from Palestinian leaders, including Hamas, which dismissed the idea as “absurd.”

“Gaza is not a property that can be bought and sold, and it is an integral part of our occupied Palestinian land,” said Izzat Al-Rishq, a member of Hamas’ political bureau. “Dealing with the Palestinian issue with the mentality of a real estate dealer is a recipe for failure.”

Regional leaders have also rejected Trump’s proposal, as it marks a significant break from decades of US foreign policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The issue is expected to be a major topic of discussion when Trump meets with the King of Jordan at the White House this week.

White House: Trump’s Plan is Just the Start

Despite the backlash, Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, defended the former president’s comments, calling them an “initial salvo” to bring other regional players to the negotiating table.

“Come to the table with your plan if you don’t like his plan,” Waltz said on NBC’s Meet the Press. He also claimed that the White House has received “all kinds of outreach” following Trump’s proposal.

A Radical Shift in US Policy

Trump’s proposal marks a drastic shift from traditional US foreign policy, which has long supported a negotiated two-state solution. His suggestion that the US “owns” Gaza and could redevelop it as a real estate project adds another layer of controversy to an already sensitive geopolitical crisis.

As discussions continue, Trump’s plan remains highly divisive, sparking debates over sovereignty, international law, and the future of Gaza.

Qatar announced on Monday morning that a deal has been struck to release an Israeli civilian hostage and allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza. This agreement aims to ease the growing tensions in the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Key Details of the Agreement

Hostage Release: Hamas will release Israeli civilian Arbel Yehoud, along with two other hostages, before Friday. Additionally, Israeli soldier Agam Berger will be freed on Thursday.

Palestinian Movement: As part of the deal, Israel will allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza starting Monday. Israeli military authorities confirmed that the return process will begin at 7 a.m., with people crossing on foot.

Tensions Surrounding Hostage Release

Originally, Israel was supposed to allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza starting Saturday. However, this was delayed due to Yehoud’s detention, which Israel argued should have been resolved earlier. Hamas, on the other hand, accused Israel of breaching the agreement.

In addition to this current release, there is an ongoing plan for a larger batch of hostages to be freed next Saturday, with three more individuals expected to be released.

Hamas Releases Information on Hostages

In a related development, Hamas provided a list of all hostages to be freed during the ceasefire’s six-week first phase, which Israel confirmed receiving.

Violence Erupts at the Netzarim Crossing

As thousands of Palestinians awaited their chance to move north, violence erupted. Israeli forces fired on the crowd at the Netzarim corridor, killing two and injuring nine, including a child. Israel’s military stated that warning shots were fired at groups of individuals approaching Israeli troops, which it deemed a security threat.

Proposed Resettlement of Gaza’s Population

U.S. President Donald Trump recently suggested the possibility of temporarily resettling most of Gaza’s population in Egypt and Jordan, aiming to “clean out” the war-torn region. However, Egypt, Jordan, and the Palestinian leadership have rejected this idea, fearing that Israel might never allow refugees to return.

Hamas condemned the proposal, with senior official Bassem Naim insisting that Palestinians would never accept such a solution, even under the guise of reconstruction. He argued that Gaza could be rebuilt even better if Israel lifted its blockade.

Ceasefire’s Fragile State and the Prospect of Renewed Fighting

Despite the ceasefire agreement, the situation remains delicate. Since the ceasefire began last Sunday, Israel has pulled back from several areas of Gaza. However, tensions remain high. Hamas freed four female Israeli soldiers on Saturday, and Israel released around 200 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom were serving life sentences for deadly attacks. Israel has stated that Yehoud should have been released earlier in the process.

Many Palestinians, especially those waiting to move north, have expressed frustration. Nadia Qasem, a displaced woman, stated, “We have been in agony for a year and a half,” while Fadi al-Sinwar, another displaced resident, said, “The fate of more than a million people is linked to one person,” referring to Yehoud’s release.

Challenges in Ending the War

The ceasefire, aimed at ending the 15-month war ignited by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack, has yet to resolve the deeper issues. While the first phase of the ceasefire includes the release of 33 hostages and nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, the second phase is more complicated. Hamas has made it clear that they will not release the remaining hostages without a complete end to the war, while Israel has threatened to resume its offensive until Hamas is eradicated.

The humanitarian toll of the conflict is staggering, with over 47,000 Palestinians reported dead, half of whom are women and children. Meanwhile, the Israeli military claims to have killed over 17,000 fighters. The war has left much of Gaza in ruins, with large swaths of the region flattened and nearly 90% of its population displaced.

Conclusion

As this fragile ceasefire holds, the future of Gaza remains uncertain. With hostages being freed and Palestinians allowed to return to northern Gaza, both sides face the daunting task of addressing the humanitarian crisis and finding a path toward a sustainable peace. However, with tensions still running high, the road to lasting resolution appears fraught with difficulty.

Putin Threatens Kyiv Decision-Makers After Strike on Energy Grid

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a threat to target decision-making centers in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, using Russia’s new ballistic missile, the Oreshnik. This statement came just hours after Russia launched a large-scale strike on Ukraine’s energy grid overnight, which Putin described as retaliation for Ukraine’s attacks on Russian soil using U.S.-supplied Atacms missiles.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that any Russian attempts at “blackmail” would face a strong reply from Ukraine.

Ukraine recently used Atacms and UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles to strike inside Russia, marking the first such attacks since the invasion began in February 2022, with approval from the United States, the UK, and France.

The Russian strike was carried out over several hours, involving waves of drones and missiles hitting various locations across Ukraine. This marked the second time this month that Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has been targeted. While no casualties were reported, the attack left more than one million Ukrainians without power.

Zelensky condemned the use of cluster munitions in the attack, noting their severe risk to civilians and the challenges they present to rescue teams and repair workers. “Cluster warheads are a particularly dangerous type of weapon,” he said, adding that they significantly complicate efforts to restore vital services.

Putin confirmed that the attack involved 90 missiles and 100 drones, including the new Oreshnik ballistic missile, which he claims is “intercept-proof.” However, U.S. officials believe Russia has only a limited number of these experimental missiles and will need time to produce more.

In his nightly address, Zelensky responded to Putin’s threats, accusing the Russian president of having no interest in ending the war and attempting to force U.S. President Joe Biden to accept Russia’s terms. Zelensky also highlighted Putin’s warning that Russia would not allow Ukraine to acquire nuclear weapons, threatening to use “all means of destruction” if Ukraine ever pursued them.

This threat likely refers to recent reports suggesting that some unnamed Western officials had considered providing Ukraine with nuclear weapons, particularly before President Biden leaves office in January. Zelensky has frequently expressed frustration over the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which saw Ukraine give up its inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union in exchange for security assurances that have not been upheld.

The Russian attacks caused explosions across several Ukrainian cities, including Odesa, Kharkiv, and Lutsk. Kyiv was also targeted, but Ukrainian authorities claimed to have intercepted all missiles aimed at the capital. The attack lasted nearly 10 hours, with at least 12 regions across Ukraine, including three in the west, affected. Emergency power outages were imposed in response, with over 280,000 people in the Rivne region and 523,000 in Lviv left without electricity. In Kherson, authorities warned of power outages lasting several days.

With winter approaching, Ukrainian officials are concerned that Russia will continue its assault on the energy grid. The country has already faced bitter winters during Russia’s invasion, and the current one promises to be just as harsh. Ukraine’s energy company, DTEK, reported significant damage to its thermal plants, and this attack marks the 11th major assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since March. Over 190 attacks have been made on energy plants since the invasion began.

Despite the destruction, Ukraine has received significant support, including up to €107 million ($89 million) worth of equipment aid from the European Commission and the U.S. to help restore power. But as temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, Ukraine braces for yet another challenging winter of war.

Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire Holds as Displaced Lebanese Begin Returning Home

BEIRUT, Nov 27 (Reuters) – A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group, held on Wednesday after being brokered by the U.S. and France. The agreement has brought an end to 14 months of deadly cross-border conflict, enabling displaced civilians to start returning to their homes in the devastated border regions.

This truce marks a significant diplomatic breakthrough in a region long marred by conflict. While it has halted the bloodiest clashes in years between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah, Israel continues its separate war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Displaced Families Return to Devastated Homes

In Lebanon, cars loaded with belongings such as mattresses, suitcases, and furniture filled the roads southward, particularly through Tyre, a city heavily bombed during the fighting. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that approximately 1.4 million people were displaced by the violence.

In the village of Zibqin, one returning resident, Asya Atwi, stood amidst the ruins of her home with her family. Despite the devastation, she expressed defiance:
“The important thing is that we’re back, against Israel’s will and against the will of all the enemies. We will sleep on the rubble.”

Similarly, Zahi Hijazi, a 67-year-old resident of Beirut’s southern suburbs, surveyed the destruction of his apartment, calling it the loss of a lifetime’s savings.

Hezbollah Remains Defiant

In its first official statement since the ceasefire, Hezbollah avoided mentioning the agreement directly but reaffirmed its readiness to confront Israel. The group pledged to monitor Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, claiming its fighters were prepared to act if necessary. Hezbollah has suffered significant setbacks during the conflict, including the loss of its leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Casualties and Damage

The conflict has killed at least 3,768 people in Lebanon, according to official health reports, and caused widespread destruction across the country. In response to Hezbollah rocket attacks that began in October 2023, Israel launched extensive strikes on Lebanese towns and cities, including Beirut’s southern suburbs.

In Israel, displaced residents have also begun returning to border areas. However, the scars of conflict remain evident. Asor Gal’it, returning to the border town of Metula, expressed mixed feelings:
“We heard some shots when we arrived, but we trust our army. Let’s hope for the best.”

Ceasefire Terms and Enforcement

Under the agreement, Israeli forces are allowed to remain in southern Lebanon for 60 days to ensure a smooth withdrawal. The Lebanese army, tasked with overseeing the truce, has begun deploying additional troops south of the Litani River, an area previously bombarded by Israeli forces.

Israeli military officials have warned that any breaches of the ceasefire will be met with swift action. Israel’s Chief of General Staff, Herzi Halevi, stated:
“Hezbollah operatives approaching our forces or border villages will be struck. We’re preparing for the possibility that this truce may not hold.”

Diplomatic Efforts Shift to Gaza

While the truce has brought some relief to Lebanon, Gaza remains mired in conflict. Israel has vowed to continue its military campaign against Hamas, following the group’s deadly attacks on Israeli communities in October 2023.

U.S. President Joe Biden, speaking shortly after the ceasefire was approved by Israel, called it a step toward lasting peace:
“This agreement is designed to ensure that Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations can no longer threaten Israel’s security. Our efforts now focus on achieving a similar truce in Gaza.”

Meanwhile, many in Gaza feel abandoned. Displaced resident Malak Abu Laila expressed despair:
“We hope for mercy and a truce here because we are exhausted.”

A Fragile Hope

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has offered a glimmer of stability in a turbulent region. However, the challenges of rebuilding and ensuring lasting peace remain immense, particularly as violence continues in Gaza. For now, those returning home in Lebanon and Israel are left to rebuild their lives amid the ruins of war.

U.S. Envoy Says Israel-Hezbollah Truce “Within Our Grasp,” but Gaza Crisis Deepens

Lebanon: Progress Toward a Truce

BEIRUT (AP) — U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein expressed optimism on Tuesday that a truce between Israel and Hezbollah was “within our grasp” following talks in Lebanon. This comes as Hezbollah’s allies in the Lebanese government indicated positive reception to a proposal involving the withdrawal of both Hezbollah fighters and Israeli ground forces from the U.N.-designated buffer zone in southern Lebanon.

Proposed Plan:

Thousands of additional U.N. peacekeepers and Lebanese troops would patrol the buffer zone.

Israel seeks stronger enforcement mechanisms, including rights for military action against potential Hezbollah threats, which Lebanon is likely to oppose.

During discussions with Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, Hochstein described the talks as “very constructive” and highlighted significant progress.

Tensions Escalate Along the Border

Israeli airstrikes continue to target southern Lebanon, with three Lebanese soldiers killed in the town of Sarafand on Tuesday, adding to the 41 soldiers reportedly killed in the past month.

Lebanon awaits further details from Hochstein’s talks with Israeli officials, but optimism in Beirut contrasts sharply with the deteriorating situation in Gaza.

Gaza: A Humanitarian Catastrophe

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens as Israel’s military siege prevents food and aid deliveries to northern areas, where famine conditions are feared.

Aid Blockades and Worsening Conditions

The U.N. reports that almost no food or humanitarian aid has reached northern Gaza for over 40 days.

Planned humanitarian missions are often rejected or obstructed by Israeli forces.

Towns like Beit Hanoun and Jabaliya remain cut off, leaving 75,000 residents without basic necessities.

Israel asserts that aid deliveries are unrestricted and that efforts are underway to increase access. However, aid groups criticize the limited number of trucks entering Gaza, with only 88 trucks allowed daily in November—less than half the war’s peak levels in April.

Looting Exacerbates Crisis

The theft of nearly 100 aid trucks over the weekend caused shortages and skyrocketing food prices in central Gaza.

Bread Prices: Flour now costs 400 shekels ($100) per bag, making it inaccessible to most residents.

The U.N. said looters intercepted trucks redirected by Israeli forces to unfamiliar routes near the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Hamas denied involvement in the looting and claimed to be taking measures against theft and market exploitation.

Regional Fallout: The War’s Expanding Toll

Gaza and Israeli Casualties

The war in Gaza began after Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and abducted around 250 hostages.

Israel’s response has killed nearly 44,000 Palestinians, over half of whom are women and children.

Lebanon Casualties

Hezbollah’s involvement in the conflict has led to over 3,500 deaths and 15,000 injuries in Lebanon due to Israeli bombardments.

Displacement continues to rise, with 1.2 million Lebanese citizens forced to flee their homes.

Israel Casualties

On the Israeli side, 87 soldiers and 50 civilians have been killed in the conflict with Hezbollah.

Conclusion

While progress toward a truce between Israel and Hezbollah offers some hope for de-escalation in Lebanon, the crisis in Gaza underscores the region’s ongoing humanitarian and geopolitical turmoil. The war’s devastating impact on civilians demands urgent international attention.

US-Israel Panel to Investigate Civilian Casualties in Gaza, First Meeting Set for December

The Biden administration has announced that a U.S.-Israel panel will hold its first meeting in early December to address reports of civilian harm during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This meeting, however, comes more than a month later than the U.S. initially requested, which was for the panel to be established by the end of October.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that the panel will focus on gathering information regarding incidents involving American-made or -supplied weapons, which have been implicated in civilian casualties. The goal, Miller explained, is to assist the State Department in evaluating the use of U.S.-provided weapons and to inform potential U.S. policy decisions related to the war.

This panel follows the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, which triggered Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. The conflict, which has lasted for weeks, has caused widespread devastation. Experts warn that famine may already be affecting northern Gaza, with Israel’s air and ground offensives leading to hundreds of deaths and forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes.

In response to worsening humanitarian conditions, U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, sent a letter to Israeli leaders in October, urging them to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The letter warned that the U.S. might restrict some weapons systems to Israel if progress was not made within 30 days. However, that deadline passed without any concrete decisions, and while some positive steps were noted, Israel has yet to meet the full criteria laid out by the U.S.

Aid organizations have reported that the situation in Gaza has continued to deteriorate, citing incidents such as the theft of nearly 100 trucks carrying vital supplies, which led to soaring food prices and severe shortages, particularly in central Gaza. Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, and many are now living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions in tent camps.

Miller acknowledged these developments, pointing to a breakdown in law and order in Gaza and emphasizing the need for an end to the fighting. He stressed that a sustainable resolution to the crisis could only be achieved with a new governance and security framework in Gaza, which would address the root issues behind the ongoing conflict.

The U.S. hopes that the investigation into civilian casualties will contribute to making more informed decisions about its future support and actions in the region.
