Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes across southern Lebanon on Thursday, targeting several towns after warning residents to evacuate. The attacks marked a sharp escalation in near-daily cross-border operations that have intensified over recent months.

According to the Israeli military, the strikes hit “military infrastructure” belonging to Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group. Lebanese officials confirmed that at least one person was wounded, while most residents in the targeted areas had already fled following Israeli warnings.

Warnings Precede Airstrikes

Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee issued public warnings in Arabic urging residents of Tayba, Teir Debba—east of the coastal city of Tyre—and Aita al-Jabal to move at least 500 meters away from designated targets. Additional alerts were later sent to the towns of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Kfar Dounin.

“The Israel Defense Forces will not allow Hezbollah to rearm, recover, or rebuild its strength to threaten the State of Israel,” Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian said during a Thursday briefing. She added that the operations aimed to prevent Hezbollah from regaining the military capacity it lost during last year’s conflict.

Lebanon’s Leadership Responds

The airstrikes coincided with a meeting in Beirut led by Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who convened his cabinet to discuss a plan by the Lebanese army to disarm Hezbollah and other non-state armed factions operating within the country. The proposal, drafted earlier this year, seeks to place all armed groups under state control—a longstanding demand from Western and Arab partners.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reiterated his opposition to Israel’s airstrikes and the continued occupation of five disputed hilltop positions on Lebanese territory. However, he also signaled openness to diplomatic talks aimed at easing cross-border tensions.

Hezbollah’s Position and Capabilities

Hezbollah, which has fought multiple wars with Israel since its founding in the 1980s, urged Beirut not to engage in negotiations with Israel. The group’s deputy leader, Sheikh Naim Kassem, recently stated that Hezbollah “will remain ready to fight” despite the severe losses suffered in Israel’s 2024 air campaign.

Israel accuses Hezbollah of using civilian areas to rebuild its arsenal and command networks in defiance of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreed nearly a year ago. The Lebanese government, by contrast, has condemned the air raids as violations of its sovereignty and as attacks on civilian infrastructure not directly linked to the militia.

Ceasefire Strains and Civilian Toll

The ceasefire that took effect in November 2024 formally ended a monthslong war triggered by cross-border violence following the Hamas-led assault on Israel on October 7, 2023. Hezbollah began launching rockets into northern Israel soon after, declaring solidarity with Hamas and the Palestinian cause. Those exchanges escalated throughout 2024, culminating in full-scale hostilities by September.

Since the truce, both sides have accused each other of repeated violations. Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reports that more than 270 people have been killed and around 850 wounded by Israeli military actions since the ceasefire began. The United Nations Human Rights Office verified that at least 107 of those fatalities were civilians or noncombatants. Israel, meanwhile, has reported no fatalities from cross-border attacks since November.

New U.S. Sanctions on Hezbollah Financing

In a related move on Thursday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed new sanctions targeting Hezbollah’s financial network. The measures focus on “financial operatives who oversee the movement of funds from Iran to Hezbollah,” according to a statement. The sanctions include several licensed and unlicensed money exchange offices accused of failing to perform due diligence on transactions that facilitate money laundering through Lebanon’s largely cash-based economy.

The Treasury said the restrictions are part of broader efforts to disrupt Iran’s funding channels to armed groups across the Middle East, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and other proxy forces.

Regional Outlook

Analysts say the latest escalation underscores the fragility of Lebanon’s security landscape and the risk of renewed regional conflict. United Nations peacekeeping forces stationed along the Blue Line—the de facto border separating Lebanon and Israel—have urged restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation.

Despite the intensifying air campaign, there are few indications that either side seeks a return to all-out war. However, the combination of military pressure, financial sanctions, and political divisions in Beirut continues to test Lebanon’s stability nearly a year after the ceasefire was signed.

Gaza’s fragile ceasefire faced its first major test on Sunday as Israeli forces carried out airstrikes following reported attacks by Hamas militants, while the transfer of aid into the territory was briefly paused.

The military later reported that it had resumed enforcement of the ceasefire, and an Israeli security official confirmed that aid deliveries were expected to continue Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The renewed fighting comes just over a week after the U.S.-brokered ceasefire, aimed at ending more than two years of conflict. There was no immediate comment from the United States.

Casualties and Strikes in Gaza

Health authorities in Gaza reported at least 36 Palestinian deaths, including children, from Israeli strikes. The Israeli military said it targeted dozens of Hamas positions after its troops came under fire in areas near Rafah, part of the agreed ceasefire lines.

A senior Egyptian official involved in ceasefire negotiations said “round-the-clock” diplomatic efforts were underway to de-escalate tensions. The official spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to brief the media.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the military to take “strong action” against any violations but did not issue threats of returning to full-scale war. Hamas, meanwhile, accused Israel of multiple ceasefire breaches and stated that it had been unable to communicate with some of its units in Rafah for months. “We are not responsible for any incidents occurring in those areas,” the group said.

Impact on Civilians

Residents expressed concern that the renewed violence could escalate, further straining humanitarian conditions in the territory. Mahmoud Hashim, a father of five in Gaza City, called on U.S. and international mediators to intervene.

Medical facilities reported multiple casualties from airstrikes. Al-Awda hospital received 24 bodies from strikes in central Gaza, including Nuseirat and Bureij camps. An airstrike in Zawaida killed six, and two men were killed in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, according to Shifa Hospital. In southern Gaza, a strike on a tent in Muwasi, Khan Younis, killed at least four, including two children.

“Where is peace?” asked Khadijeh Abu-Nofal from Khan Younis as she assisted hospital staff treating wounded children.

Hostage Remains Identified

Israel confirmed the identification of two hostages released by Hamas overnight: Ronen Engel, a father from Kibbutz Nir Oz, and Sonthaya Oakkharasri, a Thai agricultural worker from Kibbutz Be’eri. Both are believed to have been killed during the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the ongoing war. Engel’s wife and two of his three children were previously kidnapped and released under a ceasefire in November 2023.

Hamas has returned the remains of 12 hostages in the past week. The group’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, said it located another hostage and planned to hand over the body if security conditions allowed, warning that any Israeli escalation could disrupt recovery efforts.

Israel has pressed Hamas to complete the return of all 28 deceased hostages. The Rafah border crossing with Egypt remained closed Saturday pending progress on the exchange. Israel has released 150 Palestinian bodies to Gaza, including 15 on Sunday. Only 25 of the returned bodies have been identified. Earlier exchanges included 20 living hostages traded for more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.

Ceasefire Implementation and Governance Talks

A Hamas delegation led by chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya arrived in Cairo to advance discussions on the ceasefire. The next phase of talks is expected to address disarming Hamas, further Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and future governance arrangements. U.S. mediators have proposed establishing an internationally backed administrative authority.

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Kassem stated that the group is engaged in discussions to “solidify its positions” and reiterated that it would not participate in postwar governance, calling instead for the creation of a Palestinian technocratic body to manage daily affairs. “Government agencies in Gaza continue to perform their duties, as the power vacuum is very dangerous,” he added.

Casualty Figures and Humanitarian Situation

The Gaza Health Ministry reports over 68,000 deaths in the conflict, without distinguishing between civilians and combatants. Israel has challenged these figures but has not provided an official toll. Thousands more are reported missing, according to the Red Cross.

Hamas-led militants killed approximately 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and abducted 251 individuals during the initial attack in October 2023 that triggered the current war.

Gaza Truce Holds as Palestinians Return and Hostage Release Nears

Published: October 12, 2025, 21:45 EDT

The fragile ceasefire in Gaza entered its second day, allowing thousands of displaced Palestinians to return to their devastated neighborhoods. As debris clearing continued, the United States and Israel confirmed that the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas could take place as early as Monday, marking a crucial test for the region’s newly signed peace agreement.

Ceasefire Brings Brief Calm After Years of Conflict

In Gaza City, families cautiously returned to what remained of their homes after two years of conflict. “Gaza is completely destroyed. I have no idea where we should live or where to go,” said resident Mahmoud al-Shandoghli as bulldozers cleared shattered streets. Amid the ruins, a young boy raised the Palestinian flag — a symbolic gesture of resilience amid loss.

In Tel Aviv, thousands gathered at a rally celebrating the expected release of hostages. U.S. President Donald Trump and his envoy, Steve Witkoff, addressed the crowd alongside Jared Kushner. Many Israelis waved U.S. flags and chanted for peace while others called for accountability.

“To the hostages themselves, our brothers and sisters, you are coming home,” Witkoff told attendees, estimated in the hundreds of thousands. Kushner said the nation would celebrate Monday when Israel’s military expects the final 48 hostages to be freed — around 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

International Forces Coordinate Truce Efforts

Roughly 200 U.S. troops have arrived in Israel to help monitor the ceasefire with Hamas. They will operate from a coordination center designed to facilitate humanitarian aid and logistical support, officials said.

“This great effort will be achieved with no U.S. boots on the ground in Gaza,” confirmed Admiral Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command. Cooper met with U.S. and Israeli officials, including Witkoff and Kushner, to finalize monitoring arrangements.

The Egyptian presidency announced that President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi will co-host a regional “peace summit” on Monday with Trump, aimed at addressing both Gaza’s reconstruction and broader Middle East stability. French President Emmanuel Macron is also expected to attend.

Ceasefire Terms Reveal Complex Prisoner Exchange

A copy of the ceasefire agreement obtained by The Associated Press shows Hamas must disclose all information related to hostages’ remains within 72 hours. In turn, Israel agreed to share information on the remains of deceased Palestinians held in Israeli custody.

The deal, confirmed by two diplomatic officials familiar with the talks, outlines that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and international mediators will oversee all exchanges privately, without public ceremonies or media coverage.

Israel will release approximately 250 convicted prisoners and about 1,700 Palestinians detained without charge since 2023. The Israel Prison Service said detainees have already been moved to deportation centers at Ofer and Ktzi’ot prisons, awaiting final orders.

Humanitarian Agencies Push for Expanded Aid

Relief agencies have urged Israel to reopen additional crossings to increase the flow of food and medical supplies into Gaza, where aid shortages have reached critical levels. A United Nations official confirmed that Israel approved an expansion of aid deliveries beginning Sunday.

The World Food Programme said it plans to reopen 145 food distribution centers. Before the latest escalation, the U.N. managed over 400 sites across Gaza. The organization estimates that 170,000 metric tons of food aid are ready in neighboring countries, awaiting clearance for delivery.

Rebuilding and Governance Questions Loom

As the ceasefire stabilizes, questions remain over who will govern Gaza once Israeli troops withdraw and whether Hamas will agree to disarm, as stipulated in the truce.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who previously ended a ceasefire in March, warned that Israel could resume operations if Hamas fails to meet disarmament obligations. “The next stage must ensure Hamas’ complete disarmament,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

Officials at Gaza’s Shifa Hospital reported at least 45 bodies recovered from rubble in northern Gaza in the past 24 hours, adding to the mounting humanitarian toll.

Security Arrangements Under U.N. Oversight

Trump’s proposed 20-point plan calls for Israel to maintain a defensive presence along Gaza’s border, while a U.N.-authorized multinational force composed largely of Arab and Muslim troops would handle internal security. Egypt has voiced support for the plan, urging the U.N. Security Council to approve the deployment.

Israeli forces will continue limited defensive operations in roughly half of Gaza until the international mission is established, military officials confirmed.

A U.S. coordination center will remain in Israel to manage Gaza-related issues until a transitional government is formed, according to a meeting summary reviewed by AP News.

Casualties and Regional Impact

The war that began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas-led militants stormed southern Israel, has left deep scars across the region. The attack killed around 1,200 people in Israel and led to the abduction of roughly 250 hostages.

In response, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which says nearly half of the dead are women and children. The ministry’s figures, widely cited by the United Nations and independent monitors, remain the most consistent estimate of the conflict’s toll.

The fighting has fueled global protests, international diplomatic tensions, and ongoing accusations of war crimes — allegations that Israel strongly denies.

Path Forward

As Gaza’s residents sift through the ruins and international leaders gather in Cairo, hopes for a lasting peace remain fragile. The success of the ceasefire and the upcoming hostage release will determine whether this marks a turning point or another temporary pause in a decades-long conflict.

Source: AP News – Palestinians return to ruins and US expects hostages freed on Monday as Gaza ceasefire holds

Palestinians Welcome Fragile Gaza Ceasefire with Hope and Caution

Published: October 9, 2025, 21:45 EDT

Israel and Hamas have agreed to the initial phase of a peace plan brokered by the United States, marking the most significant breakthrough in nearly two years of conflict. The agreement calls for a temporary halt in fighting, the release of remaining hostages, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.

According to statements from both sides, the deal also allows humanitarian aid to enter Gaza while setting the groundwork for broader talks aimed at permanently ending hostilities.

Deal Outlines Hostage Exchange and Troop Withdrawal

Hamas officials said the group will release all remaining hostages over the coming days in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. In turn, Israeli forces will begin withdrawing from major population centers across Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to convene his cabinet to formally approve the agreement. Once ratified, Israel will publish a list of prisoners eligible for release, while affected families will have 24 hours to submit appeals to the Supreme Court.

Sources familiar with the process told the Associated Press that Hamas has already provided the list of Palestinian detainees it seeks to free as part of the U.S.-mediated deal.

Outstanding Questions Over Gaza’s Future

While the agreement represents a breakthrough, questions remain about the next phase of Gaza’s governance. The U.S. proposal envisions a demilitarized Gaza under an interim administrative body supported by international organizations.

Senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan told Al-Araby TV that any foreign-led transitional authority is unacceptable, emphasizing that governance should remain in the hands of “independent Palestinian personalities.”

Hamdan also said humanitarian aid will be distributed by the United Nations and international agencies to ensure neutrality and transparency, with 400 to 600 trucks expected to cross into Gaza daily once the truce takes effect.

Regional Diplomacy: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Global Reactions

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty praised the agreement, expressing hope that it “would mark the end of a dark and painful chapter in the region’s history.” He called for renewed efforts toward a lasting peace that guarantees security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Leaders across the Middle East and beyond echoed similar sentiments. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry urged swift implementation and full humanitarian access, while Lebanon’s president described the deal as “a first step toward a permanent ceasefire.”

From Asia to the Americas, governments including Japan, Canada, and New Zealand welcomed the development. Each called it a crucial moment to alleviate civilian suffering and revive prospects for a two-state solution.

Scenes of Relief and Cautious Hope in Tel Aviv and Gaza

In Tel Aviv, thousands gathered in Hostages Square, waving Israeli and American flags as they sang and prayed for the safe return of those held in Gaza. “It feels like a light at the end of a very long tunnel,” said 25-year-old student Einav Kahila.

Yet optimism was tempered by caution. Many Israelis expressed anxiety about the truce’s durability after two years of devastating war. “It’s not over until it’s over,” said Avi Duek, a teacher from Ramat Gan, attending with his infant son.

Across Gaza, exhausted civilians greeted the news with disbelief and relief. “We are tired, displaced, and longing for peace,” said Alaa Abd Rabbo, who fled northern Gaza for Deir al-Balah. Paramedic Saeed Awad added that previous ceasefires had failed but said this one “feels different — maybe it’s finally time.”

Humanitarian Challenges Ahead

In northern Gaza, paramedics and rescue workers began preparing for the aftermath of two years of bombardment. Fares Afana, head of paramedics in the area, called the agreement “a moment of joy” after immense loss.

“After years of bloodshed, we are physically and psychologically exhausted,” he said. “Now we can finally begin recovering the bodies and rebuilding our lives.”

Palestinian civil defense officials reported that more than 130 paramedics were killed in the line of duty during the conflict. Afana warned that clearing debris and restoring basic infrastructure “will take months, maybe years.”

Tensions Remain as Ceasefire Awaits Final Approval

Despite the announcement, sporadic violence continued along Gaza’s coastal highway as displaced Palestinians attempted to return north. Israeli tanks reportedly fired warning shots to disperse crowds trying to cross into areas still deemed combat zones.

Military officials said the ceasefire had not yet been ratified by Israel’s full government and urged residents to await formal notification before moving.

The Israeli army is expected to begin withdrawing from key urban areas such as Gaza City, Khan Younis, and Rafah once implementation begins.

Religious Gatherings and Global Reflections

In Jerusalem, thousands of Jewish worshippers gathered at the Western Wall during the Sukkot holiday, praying for peace and celebrating the imminent return of hostages. “God is making miracles,” said one participant, holding a palm branch as the crowd danced and sang.

For many, the timing of the peace deal announcement during a religious festival was seen as symbolic — a rare convergence of faith and hope after years of grief.

A Long Road Toward Lasting Peace

This marks the third ceasefire since the war began in October 2023. Earlier truces collapsed after short-lived exchanges of prisoners and hostages. Analysts caution that the success of the current deal will depend on sustained commitment from both sides and continued international oversight.

Washington has indicated it will monitor compliance closely and work with regional partners to prevent renewed hostilities. While challenges remain, diplomats described the agreement as the most promising step toward ending one of the deadliest conflicts in recent history.

Published: October 7, 2025, 22:15 EDT

Israel and the Palestinian territories marked two years since Hamas’ October 7, 2023 assault triggered one of the deadliest and most consequential wars in the region’s history. As mourners gathered across southern Israel and displaced families sought safety in Gaza, indirect talks between Israel and Hamas resumed in Egypt under a U.S.-backed peace plan aiming to secure a lasting ceasefire and the release of remaining hostages.

Israelis Gather to Remember the Victims

Thousands gathered across southern Israel on Tuesday to mourn victims of the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, which killed around 1,200 people and left deep scars across the nation. The main memorial, organized by bereaved families, took place near the border communities hit hardest during the assault.

At the site of the Nova music festival in Reim, where nearly 400 people were killed and dozens abducted, attendees held a moment of silence at 6:29 a.m. — the precise time militants stormed the grounds. Photos of victims surrounded the former dance floor as survivors recounted the chaos of that morning.

Israel’s government plans a separate ceremony next week, in line with the Hebrew calendar. The division reflects growing discontent with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war and hostage crisis. Many relatives accuse the government of failing to secure a long-term ceasefire that could bring home the remaining captives.

Gaza Endures Another Offensive

In the Gaza Strip, the humanitarian toll remains severe. Israel’s ongoing military operations have devastated urban centers and displaced hundreds of thousands. Gaza’s Health Ministry, which operates under Hamas, reports more than 67,000 Palestinians killed since 2023, roughly half of them women and children. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but independent analysts and major rights groups view the figures as the most reliable estimate available.

Entire neighborhoods in northern Gaza have been reduced to rubble as Israeli forces press forward toward Gaza City, sparking another wave of displacement. Many residents, unable to afford the perilous journey south, remain trapped amid shortages of food, medicine, and clean water.

Israel denies accusations of genocide, asserting its operations target Hamas infrastructure and are carried out in self-defense after the October 7 attack.

Egypt Hosts Renewed Indirect Talks

Diplomatic efforts to end the war have resumed in Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Israeli and Hamas negotiators are holding indirect discussions mediated by Egyptian and U.S. officials, focusing on implementing the first phase of a U.S.-drafted peace initiative backed by President Donald Trump.

The proposal seeks an immediate ceasefire in exchange for the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas in return for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody. According to Egyptian mediators cited by the Associated Press, both sides have agreed on most of the first-phase terms but continue to debate the timeline and conditions for Hamas’ disarmament — a central Israeli demand.

A senior Hamas official told Al Araby Television that the group would reject any foreign military administration of Gaza, calling the entry of international troops “unacceptable.” Another Hamas representative suggested the group might surrender its weapons to a future Palestinian governing body, though that stance was not included in its formal statement.

Political Divides and Global Reactions

The anniversary has rekindled debate within Israel over Netanyahu’s leadership and the long-term strategy for Gaza. Critics accuse his administration of failing to outline a viable political vision for the post-war period, while supporters argue that continued pressure on Hamas remains necessary to guarantee Israel’s security.

Internationally, leaders across Europe and the United Nations marked the anniversary with solemn statements and renewed calls for peace. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called Oct. 7 “a black day in Jewish history” and expressed shame over a resurgence of antisemitism since the attack. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described it as “the worst mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust,” while Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said Israel’s response, though grounded in defense, had caused “too many innocent victims among Gaza’s civilian population.”

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement urging the “immediate and unconditional” release of all hostages. He condemned the suffering endured by both sides and urged leaders to “seize the opportunity to end the cycle of trauma and violence.”

Pro-Palestinian Demonstrations Around the World

In Jakarta, more than 1,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched to the U.S. Embassy to protest Israel’s blockade of Gaza and demand the release of activists detained after attempting to breach the blockade by sea. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and chanted “Free, free Palestine” as police deployed in large numbers to maintain order. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, has no formal ties with Israel and has consistently voiced support for Palestinian statehood.

In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned planned pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses as “un-British,” warning against rhetoric that could incite antisemitism. His comments followed a deadly attack on a synagogue in Manchester days earlier, which heightened tensions nationwide.

The Path Ahead: Fragile Peace and Lingering Uncertainty

Despite renewed diplomatic momentum, major questions remain unresolved. The future governance of Gaza, the status of disarmament, and Israel’s proposed “security perimeter” inside the enclave all remain points of contention.

The U.S.-led plan envisions an eventual transition toward a unified Palestinian administration, but negotiators have yet to clarify how that would be implemented. Analysts warn that without a clear framework for reconstruction and political reconciliation, the cycle of violence could continue.

As families across Israel and Gaza mourn their losses, the region remains suspended between grief and hope — a fragile balance that hinges on whether this latest round of diplomacy can deliver what two years of war could not: a sustainable peace.

Netanyahu Expects Hostage Release as Israel, Hamas Prepare for U.S.-Backed Peace Talks in Egypt

Published: October 5, 2025, 16:30 EDT

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hopes to announce the release of all remaining hostages held in Gaza “in the coming days,” as Israel and Hamas prepare for indirect talks in Cairo on Monday under a new U.S.-backed proposal aimed at ending the war. The renewed diplomatic activity marks one of the most significant steps toward a ceasefire since the conflict began two years ago.

Netanyahu Eyes Swift Negotiations with Egypt as Mediator

In a brief statement on Saturday, Netanyahu said he dispatched a delegation to Egypt “to finalize technical details,” adding that his government aims to conclude negotiations “within a few days.”

However, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel would not agree to a full military withdrawal from Gaza — a core Hamas demand since the start of the conflict. The prime minister said Israeli forces would maintain control of territories they currently occupy and reiterated that Hamas must be disarmed, whether “through diplomacy or military action.”

Hamas has reportedly accepted parts of the U.S. proposal, according to mediators. U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the development but urged Hamas to “move quickly,” warning that “all bets will be off” if progress stalls.

Ceasefire Framework and Initial Reactions

Trump stated that the ceasefire would begin as soon as Hamas confirms the “initial withdrawal line” in Gaza, sharing a map that indicated Israeli forces would remain stationed across significant parts of the enclave.

He also ordered Israel to halt airstrikes, and reports from Gaza City on Saturday suggested a notable reduction in bombing. Still, local hospital officials reported at least 22 deaths, including women and children.

Israeli defense officials confirmed they had been instructed to adopt a defensive posture in preparation for the first phase of the U.S. plan. “We are not conducting offensive operations,” one official said on condition of anonymity.

Despite this directive, Al-Ahli Hospital reported that an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood killed 17 people and wounded 25 others. Hospital director Fadel Naim said, “The strikes are still ongoing.” Israel’s military said it targeted a Hamas operative and “regrets any harm caused to civilians.”

Diplomatic Momentum Builds Ahead of War Anniversary

The renewed talks come just days before the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that triggered the ongoing conflict. Trump has pledged to secure a peace deal and the release of hostages before the symbolic date, a goal that has gained broad international support.

Egypt, acting as a mediator, said Monday’s discussions would focus on preparing for the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons. Egyptian officials also confirmed that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff will head Washington’s negotiating team.

A senior Egyptian diplomat said the talks will review maps detailing the phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from designated parts of Gaza. The source added that regional mediators are also preparing for a broader dialogue among Palestinian factions to coordinate a unified stance on Gaza’s postwar governance.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Gaza’s second-largest armed group, said it had now accepted Hamas’ response after previously rejecting the U.S. proposal.

Provisions and Challenges of the U.S. Plan

Under the U.S. plan, Hamas would release all remaining 48 hostages — including approximately 20 believed to be alive — within three days. In exchange, Israel would halt its offensive, withdraw from much of Gaza, release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, and allow expanded humanitarian access for reconstruction efforts.

While Hamas has agreed in principle to the release and transfer of authority to other Palestinian representatives, it has not confirmed its stance on demilitarization — a key sticking point.

Retired Israeli general Amir Avivi, who chairs the Defense and Security Forum, said Israel could “pause operations for a few days” to facilitate hostage releases but would resume its offensive if Hamas fails to disarm.

Security analyst Oded Ailam of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs said Hamas’ position “repackages old demands in softer terms,” suggesting little change in substance.

Mixed Reactions Within Israel’s Leadership

Within Netanyahu’s coalition, right-wing ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir criticized the ceasefire plan but stopped short of threatening to collapse the government.

Meanwhile, thousands gathered in Tel Aviv for weekly protests urging a resolution to the war and the safe return of hostages. A representative group for hostages’ families said, “The possibility of seeing our loved ones return has never been closer.” The group urged Trump to “keep pressing forward with full force” while warning that “extremists on both sides” could derail progress.

Across Europe, protesters also rallied in major cities calling for an end to the war and increased humanitarian access to Gaza.

Humanitarian Toll and Growing Fatigue in Gaza

Inside Gaza, residents expressed cautious hope but lingering skepticism about the talks. “We want action, not promises,” said Sameer Qudeeh of Khan Younis. “I hope Hamas ends the war because we are truly tired,” added local resident Mohammad Shaat.

Israel’s army issued renewed warnings Saturday against returning to northern Gaza, calling it a “dangerous combat zone.” Residents in the area reported limited movement of Israeli troops but continued artillery fire and airstrikes.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said its Saraya field hospital in southern Gaza received 10 bodies and more than 70 injured following Israeli airstrikes on Saturday afternoon.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that the overall Palestinian death toll has surpassed 67,000, after adding over 700 newly verified names. The ministry, which operates under Hamas’ administration, said women and children make up about half the casualties. The United Nations and independent observers continue to regard the ministry’s data as the most comprehensive available.

Outlook: Fragile Hope Amid Unresolved Divisions

Despite growing international pressure and rare cooperation among mediators, uncertainty remains high. Israel insists on long-term security guarantees, while Hamas faces pressure from within Gaza to secure a permanent ceasefire without surrendering control.

Trump orders halt to Gaza bombing after Hamas signals partial acceptance of peace plan and readiness to release hostages

Published: October 4, 2025, 18:30 EDT

Summary

U.S. President Donald Trump has instructed Israel to halt its bombing campaign in Gaza after Hamas announced it would accept parts of his peace plan, including releasing remaining hostages taken during the October 2023 attacks. While Hamas expressed readiness for concessions, significant disagreements remain, leaving the path to a full ceasefire uncertain.

Trump Pushes for Immediate Halt to Bombing

On Friday, President Donald Trump ordered Israel to suspend airstrikes in the Gaza Strip following Hamas’ partial acceptance of his proposed peace initiative. Hamas leaders said they were prepared to release the hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, assault on Israel and transfer governing authority to other Palestinian factions, but stressed that broader issues still required negotiations.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government was ready to move forward with the “first stage” of Trump’s plan, apparently referring to the release of hostages. His office reiterated that Israel remained committed to its previously stated principles for ending the war, without directly addressing areas of disagreement with Hamas.

Trump praised the statement from Hamas, writing on social media: “I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE.” He added that hostages could not be safely released while Gaza remained under bombardment: “Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly!”

Hamas Acceptance Comes with Conditions

Hamas said that elements of the proposal concerning the political future of Gaza and broader Palestinian rights would need to be decided collectively with other Palestinian factions. The group also emphasized that international law must guide any long-term settlement.

The official statement made no mention of disarmament—an essential Israeli demand in Trump’s peace proposal. Senior Hamas officials acknowledged on regional television that there were significant disagreements and warned that implementation would require extensive negotiations.

Mousa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas figure, told Al Jazeera that the group could not guarantee the release of all hostages within 72 hours, citing the challenge of locating remains of captives believed to have died. Another official, Osama Hamdan, said foreign administration of Gaza was “unacceptable,” contradicting a core element of Trump’s plan that called for international oversight.

Peace Effort Draws International Support

The latest ceasefire initiative has drawn broad backing from mediators and world leaders. Egypt and Qatar, who have played central roles in previous negotiations, welcomed Hamas’ response and pledged to continue discussions.

Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, said Doha would “continue discussions on the plan.” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also urged all sides to “seize the opportunity to bring the tragic conflict in Gaza to an end.”

French President Emmanuel Macron echoed the sentiment, declaring that “the release of all hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza are within reach.”

In Israel, the main organization representing families of hostages said Trump’s call to stop the bombing was “essential to prevent serious and irreversible harm” to their loved ones. The group appealed directly to Netanyahu to engage in “efficient and swift negotiations” to secure their return.

The Details of Trump’s Plan

Unveiled earlier this week, Trump’s proposal seeks to resolve the nearly two-year conflict while marking the second anniversary of the October 2023 Hamas-led assault on Israel.

The plan includes:

Release of the remaining 48 hostages, including about 20 believed to be alive, within three days.

Disarmament of Hamas and transfer of authority to an independent Palestinian body.

Israeli withdrawal from much of Gaza and suspension of its military campaign.

Release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli custody.

Large-scale humanitarian aid and international-led reconstruction efforts.

Placement of Gaza under temporary international governance, overseen by Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Provisions for eventual Palestinian statehood or reunification with the West Bank are absent, fueling concerns among Palestinians that the plan heavily favors Israel.

Hamas Voices Skepticism

Although Hamas welcomed the opportunity to negotiate, officials stressed the need for further talks. Abu Marzouk said the group could consider handing over weapons to a future Palestinian governing body but rejected foreign oversight. Hamdan reiterated that Gaza should remain under Palestinian, not international, administration.

Their caution reflects deep mistrust of outside proposals. Many Palestinians view U.S.-brokered initiatives as skewed toward Israeli security concerns while failing to address long-standing demands for sovereignty and rights.

Israel Pressures Hamas with Intensified Campaign

Israel has escalated its military operations in Gaza in recent months. Since ending a brief ceasefire in March, the Israeli military has cut off essential supplies, flattened neighborhoods, and displaced hundreds of thousands.

The United Nations reported that Gaza City entered famine conditions shortly before Israel’s latest offensive. Around 400,000 residents fled the city in recent weeks, though hundreds of thousands more remain trapped.

Olga Cherevko, spokesperson for the U.N. humanitarian office, described witnessing families sheltering in the parking lot of Shifa Hospital, including children and pregnant women unable to move south due to poverty. “There were many other vulnerable cases there, including elderly people and people with disabilities,” she told The Associated Press.

Despite heavy losses, Hamas retains some control in parts of Gaza not occupied by Israeli forces, continuing to mount sporadic attacks.

Human Cost of the Conflict

Since October 2023, Hamas’ cross-border assault killed about 1,200 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to Israeli authorities. The group abducted 251 individuals, with most later released during ceasefires or negotiated exchanges.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed more than 66,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry, which operates under Hamas, does not distinguish between civilian and militant deaths but reports that women and children account for about half of the casualties. International observers, including U.N. agencies, consider these figures to be the most reliable estimates available.

The conflict has displaced approximately 90% of Gaza’s population, leaving much of the territory uninhabitable.

Anniversary of October 7 Attack Nears

The latest developments come days before the second anniversary of Hamas’ attack on southern Israel. Thousands of militants stormed across the border, targeting military bases, communities, and a music festival. The unprecedented assault not only sparked one of the deadliest days in Israel’s history but also ignited a war that has devastated Gaza.

As the anniversary approaches, Trump has vowed to secure peace. In a social media post, he warned that if Hamas does not agree to the current deal by Sunday evening, Israel would unleash a devastating new military campaign. “If this LAST CHANCE agreement is not reached, all HELL, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas,” he wrote.

Outlook: Fragile Hope for Ceasefire

The combination of Trump’s high-profile intervention, international mediation, and Hamas’ partial acceptance of the plan has raised cautious optimism. Still, major obstacles remain, including questions over Gaza’s future governance, Hamas’ disarmament, and Israel’s conditions for ending the war.

For families of hostages and millions of Palestinians enduring dire humanitarian conditions, the next few days may prove decisive in determining whether the conflict moves toward peace or escalates further.

Ukraine Suffers Deadly 12-Hour Russian Air Assault, Zelensky Pledges Response

A sustained Russian bombardment lasting more than 12 hours struck Ukraine overnight, killing at least four people and injuring 70 others, according to Ukrainian officials. President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the assault as “vile,” saying it highlighted Moscow’s determination to prolong the conflict despite international calls for peace.

One of the Heaviest Attacks in Months

Ukrainian authorities reported that nearly 600 drones and several dozen missiles were launched against seven regions, making it one of the most extensive strikes in recent months. The capital, Kyiv, absorbed the brunt of the assault, with casualties including a 12-year-old girl.

Zelensky said the strikes demonstrated Russia’s intent to keep “fighting and killing,” while Moscow claimed it was targeting military and industrial facilities supporting Ukraine’s armed forces.

Civilian and Infrastructure Damage

Kyiv officials confirmed multiple civilian sites were hit, including residential buildings, a large bakery, and an automobile factory. A strike on the city’s Institute of Cardiology killed a nurse and a patient.

Emergency services warned residents through Ukraine’s air alert app, urging them to seek shelter as waves of drones approached. Anti-aircraft defenses lit up the skies as explosions echoed across the capital.

Regional Impact Beyond Kyiv

Other regions hit included Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa. Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov reported 31 injuries, among them three children. Two boys, aged 11 and 12, suffered life-threatening injuries—one from an explosion, the other from carbon monoxide poisoning—while a nine-year-old girl was also hurt.

In Sumy, a 59-year-old man died in separate strikes. Regional leaders said emergency crews were working through the night to assist survivors and repair damaged infrastructure.

Zelensky’s Warning and Diplomatic Appeals

Zelensky vowed that Ukraine “will strike back” and called for stronger international support. He framed the bombardment as Russia’s response to the conclusion of the United Nations General Assembly, saying the attack showed Moscow’s “real position.”

He urged Europe and the United States to issue a firm response, backing U.S. President Donald Trump’s warnings of harsher sanctions and European efforts to reduce reliance on Russian energy.

“Russia will not stop with Ukraine,” Zelensky warned, adding that recent incursions into NATO airspace demonstrated Moscow’s efforts to test Europe’s defenses.

U.S. and European Positions

President Trump, who had previously expressed skepticism about Ukraine’s ability to reclaim lost territory, recently shifted his stance. Last week, he said Kyiv could potentially regain land as Russia’s economy struggles under the prolonged conflict.

While Trump has so far held back from new sanctions, his administration has signaled frustration with Moscow’s reluctance to pursue peace talks. Zelensky expressed hope that Washington and European allies would take decisive steps to pressure the Kremlin.

NATO Concerns Over Airspace Violations

The strikes coincided with NATO members reporting repeated airspace violations. Early Sunday, Polish jets were scrambled in response to Russian strikes near the western border of Ukraine. The Polish military described the move as preventative, noting that incursions have become more frequent since NATO aircraft shot down three Russian drones in Poland’s airspace on September 10.

Elsewhere, Denmark reported drones flying over its airports, attributing the incidents to a “professional actor.” Estonia and Romania also accused Russia of similar violations. These developments prompted NATO to strengthen defenses on its eastern flank.

Russia’s Response at the UN

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denied Moscow had any intention of attacking European Union or NATO member states. However, he warned that any “aggression” against Russia would trigger a “decisive response.”

This statement underscored the widening rift between Moscow and Western powers, as both sides prepare for prolonged confrontation in Ukraine and beyond.

Outlook: Escalation or Diplomacy?

The scale of the latest bombardment suggests that Russia is intensifying its military campaign as winter approaches. For Ukrainians, such attacks have become both routine and unpredictable, testing the resilience of civilians and the country’s air defense systems.

Whether international partners respond with stronger sanctions or new military aid will likely shape the next phase of the war. For now, Zelensky’s vow of retaliation and Russia’s warning of countermeasures point to an uncertain and volatile path ahead.

Published: September 27, 2025, 14:00 EDT

NEW YORK — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a defiant address at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, vowing that Israel “must finish the job” against Hamas in Gaza despite mounting international isolation. His speech, marked by walkouts, protests, and accusations of war crimes, came as global calls intensify for an immediate ceasefire and recognition of Palestinian statehood.

Delegates Walk Out as Netanyahu Speaks

Netanyahu began his remarks to a partially empty UN hall after dozens of diplomats staged a walkout in protest. Seats reserved for major allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom, were occupied only by lower-level envoys, underscoring the diplomatic chill facing Israel. Iran’s delegation left behind images of children it said were killed in Gaza, highlighting the humanitarian toll of the conflict.

The prime minister accused critics of fueling antisemitism, stating: “Antisemitism dies hard. In fact, it doesn’t die at all.” He dismissed recent decisions by several countries to recognize Palestinian statehood, calling them “disgraceful” and claiming such moves would embolden terrorism.

War Framed as Regional Security Struggle

Throughout his address, Netanyahu presented Gaza as part of a broader regional conflict, citing Israeli military operations in Iran, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen. He argued that Israel’s actions were essential to regional stability and peace, describing Hamas as the “final remnants” of a threat that must be eradicated.

Netanyahu also highlighted ongoing negotiations with Syria for security arrangements and praised former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling him a key ally in confronting regional adversaries.

Symbolism and Outreach Beyond the UN

In a bid to amplify his message, Netanyahu used visual props, including a map labeled “THE CURSE,” illustrating Israel’s security challenges. He also wore a pin containing a QR code linking to information about the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which sparked the current conflict.

His office claimed that Israel broadcast the speech into Gaza using loudspeakers and mobile phone networks. However, journalists inside Gaza reported no evidence of such transmissions.

Palestinians in Wadi Gaza reacted with frustration and fatigue. “Whether he likes it or not, sooner or later, the Palestinian people will gain independence,” said displaced resident Moneir Talib. Another resident, Amjad Abdel Daiym, added: “When he says he wants to eradicate Hamas, I only see that the war is continuing against poor people like us.”

Hamas and Palestinian Leaders Respond

Hamas dismissed Netanyahu’s address as a justification for prolonging the war. In a statement, the group said: “If he were truly concerned about captives, he would have stopped his brutal bombardment and the destruction of Gaza City. Instead, he lies and continues to endanger their lives.”

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, speaking by video to the assembly a day earlier, welcomed recent recognition of Palestinian statehood by countries including France, Canada, and Australia. He urged the international community to do more, saying: “The time has come for the world to do right by the Palestinian people.”

Mounting International Isolation

Israel faces unprecedented diplomatic pressure. Over 150 nations now recognize Palestinian statehood, while the European Union is weighing sanctions. The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on charges of crimes against humanity, which he rejects. The International Court of Justice is separately considering a case accusing Israel of genocide, which it strongly denies.

The war, triggered by the Hamas attack in 2023 that killed around 1,200 people and saw more than 250 hostages taken, has since killed over 65,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials. The United Nations estimates that 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, with widespread food shortages.

Protests and Polarization

As Netanyahu spoke, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the UN headquarters in New York. “Israel has chosen a war against every conscientious human being in this world,” said Nidaa Lafi of the Palestinian Youth Movement, drawing chants of “shame” from demonstrators.

Supporters, however, praised Netanyahu’s stance. UN Watch, a Geneva-based NGO, described his message as combining “defiance in the face of terror” with “a vision for peace with Arab neighbors, and even with a free Iran one day.”

The U.S. Balancing Act

While Washington remains Israel’s closest ally, cracks are emerging. Trump, set to meet Netanyahu on Monday, signaled limits to U.S. support. He said he would oppose any Israeli move to annex the occupied West Bank, despite calls from within Netanyahu’s government to do so.

Meanwhile, Israel has approved new settlement projects in the West Bank, a move critics argue undermines the possibility of a two-state solution. Netanyahu, however, rejected such a framework, claiming it would reward Hamas and weaken Israel’s security.

A Battle Framed as Global

Concluding his speech, Netanyahu positioned Israel’s war as part of a global fight against extremism. “You know deep down,” he told fellow leaders, “that Israel is fighting your fight.”

The remarks, delivered amid walkouts, protests, and legal challenges, underscored the isolation Israel now faces even as it presses ahead with its military campaign in Gaza.

Source: AP News – Facing global isolation at UN, a defiant Netanyahu says Israel ‘must finish the job’ against Hamas

Published: September 22, 2025, 14:00 EDT

As the war in Gaza intensifies, France and Saudi Arabia are seeking to revive international momentum toward a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their proposal has gained support from several Western nations, but faces significant opposition from Israel, the United States, and domestic political divisions across the region.

Renewed Calls for Palestinian Statehood

France and Saudi Arabia are using the United Nations General Assembly as a platform to push forward a phased plan for Palestinian statehood. The proposal envisions the creation of a demilitarized Palestinian state in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, areas Israel captured during the 1967 Middle East war.

Britain, Canada, and Australia formally recognized a Palestinian state earlier this month, joining nearly 150 nations that have already extended recognition. France is expected to make a similar move during the ongoing UN gathering.

Despite growing international backing, both Israel and the United States remain firmly opposed. Washington has blocked Palestinian representatives from participating in General Assembly proceedings, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened unilateral measures, including potential annexation of parts of the West Bank.

Historical Context and Ongoing Challenges

The two-state framework has long been viewed as the most viable pathway to ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has spanned more than a century. Supporters argue that it would allow Israel to preserve its identity as a Jewish and democratic state while granting Palestinians sovereignty and rights.

Critics of the status quo note that Palestinians live under varying degrees of Israeli control, with limited autonomy in parts of the West Bank and severe restrictions in Gaza. Major rights groups have warned that the current system amounts to apartheid.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, “Without a two-state solution, there will be no peace in the Middle East.”

However, efforts to negotiate peace have repeatedly faltered. Talks that began in the early 1990s collapsed amid cycles of violence and the expansion of Israeli settlements, which now house over 500,000 Israeli citizens in the West Bank alongside three million Palestinians. No substantial negotiations have occurred since Netanyahu returned to power in 2009.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The Gaza Strip remains at the center of the crisis. Following Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack, Israel launched a military campaign that has devastated the territory. Reports indicate tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths, displacement of nearly 90% of the population, and widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure.

The United Nations has warned of famine in certain areas, while aid groups describe conditions as “uninhabitable.” Israel’s latest offensive threatens to further dismantle Gaza’s largest urban centers.

Netanyahu’s government, already opposed to Palestinian statehood prior to the war, has doubled down on its stance. Meanwhile, critics accuse U.S. policymakers of deprioritizing peace talks in favor of policies that could lead to population displacement.

The French-Saudi Proposal

France and Saudi Arabia’s plan seeks to de-escalate the conflict through a phased approach:

An immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Release of hostages held by Hamas.

Full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Transfer of authority to a politically independent body under the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas would be required to disarm, though the group has not agreed to this condition. The international community, with potential support from peacekeepers, would oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and governance.

The proposal also envisions broader regional integration, including the possibility of Saudi Arabia normalizing ties with Israel, an outcome that could reshape Middle East diplomacy.

Earlier this month, the UN General Assembly approved a nonbinding resolution endorsing the “New York Declaration,” lending symbolic weight to the initiative.

U.S. and Israeli Opposition

The United States and Israel argue that advancing Palestinian statehood under current conditions risks emboldening Hamas and undermining hostage negotiations. Ceasefire talks collapsed in September after an Israeli strike on Hamas negotiators in Qatar, and earlier attempts had already failed in March and July.

Israeli officials contend that a Palestinian state could provide Hamas with a base for future large-scale attacks. Netanyahu has described international recognition of Palestinian statehood as an attack on Israel itself, warning that unilateral moves by other nations will be met with unilateral responses.

Washington has avoided explicitly endorsing annexation but continues to oppose premature recognition of Palestinian sovereignty. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio linked discussions on annexation to the broader statehood debate during recent interviews.

The United Arab Emirates, which normalized relations with Israel through the 2020 Abraham Accords, has warned that annexation would be a “red line,” though it has not outlined potential consequences.

Unresolved Core Issues

The French-Saudi plan avoids addressing some of the most divisive elements of the conflict:

Final borders of a Palestinian state.

Fate of Israeli settlements in occupied territories.

Right of return for Palestinian refugees.

Security guarantees for both sides.

Status of Jerusalem.

Another obstacle lies in the Palestinian Authority itself. President Mahmoud Abbas, widely criticized for corruption and lack of accountability, has repeatedly postponed elections. Hamas, which won the last national election in 2006, would be excluded unless it disarms and recognizes Israel.

This has led many observers to question whether the proposed framework can deliver lasting peace. Without broad Palestinian support, analysts warn the plan risks becoming another failed roadmap in a long history of stalled negotiations.

Outlook for the Future

Despite renewed diplomatic momentum, the path to a two-state solution remains fraught with challenges. Israel’s political leadership continues to reject Palestinian statehood, the United States has withheld strong support, and Palestinian factions remain divided.

As the conflict in Gaza rages on, the humanitarian toll underscores the urgency of finding a resolution. Whether the French-Saudi plan can bridge decades of mistrust and political deadlock remains uncertain, but it has reignited global debate over one of the world’s most enduring conflicts.

Source: AP News – How the growing push for a 2-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could backfire
