A Gaza Family’s Daily Fight Against Hunger in a War-Torn Landscape

Writing Time: August 2, 2025, 14:00 (U.S. Eastern Time)

In a refugee tent along the Gaza coastline, Abeer and Fadi Sobh face a hauntingly repetitive challenge every morning: how to feed their six young children. With aid dwindling and hunger increasing, their story mirrors the broader humanitarian crisis engulfing Gaza.

Their options are limited—wait for a soup kitchen to open, hope for flour from an aid truck, or rely on the kindness of strangers. Most days, they go hungry.

Life on the Brink: Gaza’s Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

Over 22 months into the conflict, humanitarian workers warn that a full-scale famine is unfolding in Gaza. Aid restrictions, ongoing violence, and infrastructure collapse have created a catastrophic food shortage.

Israel enforced a total blockade of Gaza in March, halting the entry of food and essential supplies. Although some aid resumed in May, it remains insufficient. Much of it is hoarded or sold at inflated prices, making access for ordinary citizens increasingly difficult.

The Sobh family, displaced several times, now lives in a small tent in Deir al-Balah near Gaza City. They, like many others, rely on uncertain, infrequent charity meals or whatever scraps they can find.

Morning Routines with No Food in Sight

Fadi, a 30-year-old former street vendor, and his wife Abeer, 29, begin their mornings not with breakfast, but with seawater baths. With fresh water scarce, Abeer fetches water from the Mediterranean, pouring it over her children as they stand in a basin. It’s all they have to keep clean.

With nothing left from the previous day, Abeer sets out to beg for breakfast. Sometimes she returns with lentils, which she grinds and mixes into water for their infant daughter, Hala. On other days, she comes back empty-handed.

“One day feels like 100 days because of the summer heat, hunger, and the distress,” she says.

Scarce Aid and Dangerous Deliveries

Fadi visits a local soup kitchen, but it opens infrequently—maybe once a week—and rarely has enough food for everyone. Long waits often end with him returning home empty-handed. “The kids sleep hungry, without eating,” he says.

In the past, Fadi attempted to reach aid trucks arriving in northern Gaza. But the chaotic scenes—crowds rushing the trucks, Israeli troops firing warning shots, and desperate civilians armed with knives—made it too dangerous. Last month, Fadi was shot in the leg during one of these scrambles. Already suffering from epilepsy, he can no longer make the trip.

Meanwhile, Abeer and their older children—Youssef, 10; Mohammed, 9; and Malak, 7—walk through the streets with plastic jerrycans to collect fresh water from a central Gaza desalination plant. The children struggle under the weight, their young bodies bent under the load.

Facing Desperation with Resilience

When aid from trucks is too dangerous or unavailable, Abeer ventures out to beg directly from people who manage to secure food. “You survived death thanks to God, please give me anything,” she pleads.

Some respond to her appeals, offering small bags of flour or other items. Abeer and her son Youssef are now familiar faces at the aid distribution points. “They’re poor people, and her husband is sick,” says Youssef Abu Saleh, a man who frequently gives them part of his rations. “We’re all hungry, and we all need to eat.”

Daily Heat, Hunger, and Waiting

During the hottest part of the day, the children stay close to the tent to conserve energy. It’s not just for comfort—avoiding movement helps suppress their hunger and thirst.

As the heat fades, Abeer sends her children out to forage. They search the rubble-strewn streets for anything that might serve as fuel for cooking—scraps of wood, plastic bottles, even old shoes.

Once, one of the boys found a usable pot in the trash. It’s now the only cooking utensil the family has left.

A Meal—If They’re Lucky

On good days, Abeer gathers enough ingredients to prepare a thin lentil soup. But many nights, there is no dinner. They all go to bed hungry—again.

“I am tired. I am no longer able,” Abeer says, her voice heavy with fatigue. “If the war goes on, I am thinking of taking my life. I no longer have any strength or power.”

A Broader Humanitarian Failure

The Sobh family’s story is not unique. According to aid organizations and food experts, the Gaza Strip is now on the edge of a famine. The UN has repeatedly urged increased humanitarian access, but the political and security challenges remain unresolved.

Israel says the blockade is part of efforts to pressure Hamas, which continues to hold hostages from its October 2023 attack. Yet the consequences have rippled far beyond military targets, reaching vulnerable civilians like the Sobhs.

Even when aid does make it into Gaza, delivery is chaotic and dangerous. Armed groups, looters, and disorganized distribution networks often prevent food from reaching those who need it most.

A Cry for Help and Humanity

Global health and humanitarian experts have called for immediate intervention. Without significant changes in aid delivery and access, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is expected to worsen.

For the Sobh family, each day is a battle for survival—one fought not with weapons, but with empty pots, pleading voices, and the hope of one more meal.

Gaza Marks Eid Amid Devastation and Growing Hunger

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — As the sun rose over the war-torn Gaza Strip, Palestinians gathered for Eid al-Adha prayers—not in grand mosques or homes, but in the open air among the rubble. For many, this was a harsh reminder of the conflict’s toll, as food grows scarcer and hope for peace remains distant.

“This is the worst Eid the Palestinian people have ever faced,” said Kamel Emran, who attended prayers in Khan Younis. “No food, no flour, no shelter, no mosques, no homes, no mattresses… The conditions are very, very harsh.”

Prayers Among Ruins, Memories of Loss

Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s holiest holidays, traditionally brings families together to celebrate and share meals. But this year in Gaza, the usual joy was overshadowed by loss and hardship.

In Gaza City, Sanaa Al-Ghola stood tearfully in the ruins of a cemetery near a half-collapsed mosque. She had come to pray for her son, Mohamed al-Ghoul, who was killed last month during shelling while fetching flour. “We lost everything—our home, money, and my son,” she said, holding a photo of Mohamed. “There is no more Eid after you’re gone.”

At a displacement camp in Muwasi, Tahrir Abu Jazar warmed leftover lentils for her five children. “There are no celebrations now—no new clothes, no sacrificial meat, no gifts, no joy,” she said. Her son, trying to find normalcy, was scared away by warplanes.

Violence and Aid Challenges Continue

In Rafah, the grim reality of the conflict played out anew as nine people were killed while trying to collect humanitarian aid. Eight died from gunshot wounds, and one from shrapnel, according to hospital officials. Israel’s military has not confirmed these reports but is investigating.

A newly formed group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), denied any violence at aid points, stating distributions were “peaceful and without incident.” However, the ongoing violence and movement restrictions make aid delivery a daily struggle.

Israel warned civilians in northern Gaza of upcoming military operations after rockets were fired toward Israel from that area. Meanwhile, four Israeli soldiers were killed in a blast while searching a Hamas compound in Khan Younis, highlighting the continuing dangers on both sides.

A Devastating Toll Since October 7

The war erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched a deadly surprise attack on Israel, killing about 1,200 people and abducting 251 hostages. Israeli forces have since killed over 54,000 Palestinians—mostly civilians—and displaced roughly 90% of Gaza’s 2 million residents, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The offensive has left large parts of Gaza in ruins, forcing families into displacement and desperate conditions.

Risk of Famine Looms Over Gaza

After months of a near-total blockade, Israel has recently allowed limited food and aid into Gaza. Yet, the United Nations reports that much of this aid remains undelivered due to military restrictions and unsafe roads.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warns that by September, nearly half a million Gazans could face severe food insecurity—pushing the territory toward famine.

Rein Paulson of the FAO described the crisis starkly: “The risk of famine is really touching the whole Gaza Strip.”

Aid Distribution Under Fire

Tensions around aid distribution sites remain high. Frequent shootings near distribution points have led to more than 80 deaths in recent weeks, with Israeli troops and Palestinians clashing over access.

Israel accuses Hamas of interfering with aid efforts, while Palestinian hospitals report deaths caused by soldiers firing at crowds. In response to dangerous crowding, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation temporarily paused aid distribution, later clarifying it was a short-term safety measure.

The Israeli military announced new rules limiting access to aid sites strictly between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., designating other times as closed military zones.

Controversy Hits U.S. Consulting Firm Involved in Gaza Aid

Adding to the turmoil, the Boston Consulting Group confirmed it had dismissed two partners for undisclosed work related to the GHF’s food distribution efforts in Gaza. The firm is continuing its investigation.

The Human Face of a Conflict Without End

As Gaza endures this brutal conflict, the Eid prayers in the rubble, the shrinking food supplies, and the stories of families torn apart by violence remind the world of the human cost behind the headlines. For many Palestinians, this Eid was not about celebration—but survival.

New U.S.-Backed Plan Faces Pushback from Aid Organizations

A new proposal from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a group backed by U.S. security contractors and former military officers, aims to take over the distribution of aid in Gaza, following a plan similar to Israel’s strategy. The foundation’s goal is to replace the existing distribution system run by the United Nations and other international aid agencies, a move that has sparked controversy and concern.

The Proposal and Its Supporters

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s proposal suggests creating four aid distribution hubs across Gaza to supply food, water, and hygiene kits to the population. The plan has the backing of the U.S. government and former U.N. World Food Program director David Beasley, who is considered for a leadership role. However, the proposal’s details remain under discussion, and it has not been fully endorsed by all parties involved.

Israel’s Control of Aid

Israel has blockaded Gaza for over two months, stopping the entry of essential supplies such as food, medicine, and fuel. The country insists that any aid distribution must be managed in a way that allows Israel to maintain control, particularly to prevent the diversion of resources to Hamas and other militants. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s proposal mirrors Israel’s concerns by centralizing aid distribution, but it has not clarified how it will balance humanitarian needs with security concerns.

The Role of Private Security

One of the most controversial aspects of the proposal is the involvement of private security companies to ensure the safe transportation and distribution of aid. The foundation plans to use armored vehicles and other security measures to protect supplies from being intercepted by militants or criminal gangs. Aid workers have expressed concerns that this could blur the lines between humanitarian work and military objectives, potentially putting civilians at risk and undermining the neutrality of aid efforts.

Concerns from Aid Workers

Several humanitarian organizations, including the U.N. and the Norwegian Refugee Council, have voiced concerns that this plan could displace large numbers of Palestinians and forcibly concentrate them around aid hubs. They argue that such an approach could be used to further Israel’s political and military goals, effectively reshaping Gaza’s population distribution in a way that might lead to further displacement and suffering.

Shaina Low, a communications adviser for the Norwegian Refugee Council, called the proposal “a solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist,” referring to Israel’s claims that Hamas diverts aid. Aid workers also worry that the private security element could undermine the principles of humanitarian neutrality, especially if contractors with military ties are involved in overseeing distribution.

The Future of Aid in Gaza

While the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation insists its approach is focused purely on delivering aid to those in need, critics argue that it could have far-reaching implications for both the humanitarian situation and the political landscape in Gaza. With the situation in Gaza continuing to deteriorate, the international community is closely monitoring the development of this proposal and its potential impact on one of the world’s most urgent humanitarian crises.

What’s Next?

The proposal is still in its early stages, and it remains unclear whether it will be implemented. However, the involvement of private security companies, the focus on centralized aid hubs, and the apparent alignment with Israeli policies have already raised alarms. As more details emerge, aid organizations and humanitarian groups are urging the international community to carefully consider the consequences of such a plan.

These two children were among the youngest captives taken by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attack, becoming powerful symbols of the profound trauma caused that day.

The Handover Process

The bodies were delivered in four black coffins, each bearing a small photograph of the deceased. Red Cross vehicles transported the coffins away from the Gaza Strip, escorted by armed Hamas militants in black and camouflage uniforms. The United Nations’ Volker Turk condemned the “parading of bodies” as cruel and abhorrent, emphasizing that international law requires respect for the dignity of the deceased.

Upon the bodies’ transfer, the coffins were scanned for explosives by the Israeli military before being transported to Israel. As the convoy passed by, Israelis gathered in the rain near the Gaza border to pay their respects. One mourner, Efrat, expressed the collective grief, saying, “We stand here together, with a broken heart. The sky is also crying with us, and we pray to see better days.”

In Tel Aviv, people gathered outside Israel’s defense headquarters, known as Hostages Square, some visibly weeping. President Isaac Herzog shared the nation’s sorrow, stating, “Agony. Pain. There are no words. Our hearts— the hearts of an entire nation—lie in tatters.”

Controversial Symbolism

A militant in Gaza stood beside a poster featuring an image of a man standing over coffins draped in Israeli flags. The poster depicted tree roots instead of legs, implying that the land belonged to Palestinians, with the text: “The Return of the War = The Return of Your Prisoners in Coffins.” This imagery added to the tension surrounding the handover, which has been criticized as being part of Hamas’ broader public campaign.

Background on the Hostages

Kfir and Ariel’s mother, Shiri Bibas, was also among those abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz, a community near Gaza that was overrun by Hamas militants on October 7. The boys’ abduction, along with their mother, became a powerful symbol of the violence inflicted that day. Hamas initially claimed in November 2023 that the boys and their mother had been killed in an Israeli airstrike, though Israeli authorities had not confirmed their deaths at that time.

Yiftach Cohen, a resident of Nir Oz, spoke to the significance of the Bibas family’s story, noting, “Shiri and the kids became a symbol.” The village had lost about a quarter of its residents, either killed or kidnapped, during the attack. The father, Yarden Bibas, was released in a prisoner exchange earlier this month.

Another prominent hostage, 83-year-old Oded Lifschitz, was taken from the same kibbutz. A former journalist and peace activist, Lifschitz had been an outspoken critic of Israeli policies, including Prime Minister Netanyahu’s stance on the two-state solution. Lifschitz was released earlier, while his wife, Yocheved, was freed two weeks after their abduction.

Hamas’ Ceasefire Agreement and Future Handover Plans

The bodies of Kfir, Ariel, Shiri, and Oded were handed over as part of the ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar and Egypt with U.S. backing. The Red Cross had called for the handover to be carried out with dignity, although Hamas’ public display of the bodies sparked growing condemnation.

This handover marked the first return of deceased hostages under the current agreement. However, Israel has not confirmed their identities until DNA testing is completed.

The October 7 Hamas-led attack killed approximately 1,200 Israelis, while 251 people were taken hostage. Israel’s subsequent military operations in Gaza have resulted in around 48,000 Palestinian casualties, according to health authorities. Gaza’s densely populated areas have been devastated.

The exchange will continue with six living hostages scheduled for release on Saturday in exchange for Palestinian detainees. These negotiations are expected to cover the return of around 60 hostages, less than half of whom are believed to be alive. Talks will also address the potential withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza to end the ongoing conflict.

Israel Confirms Return of Four Dead Hostages, Including Young Family

Israel has confirmed that the remains of four hostages taken by Hamas on October 7, 2023, will be returned from Gaza on Thursday as part of a ceasefire agreement. Among them are a mother and her two young children, whose fate had remained uncertain for months, and a retired journalist in his 80s.

Hostages Identified: A Tragic Loss

The Israeli government has verified that the bodies of Shiri Bibas, 32, and her two sons, Ariel (4 years old) and Kfir (9 months old), will be returned. Their capture had deeply impacted Israeli society, symbolizing the brutality of Hamas’ attack.

Additionally, the remains of Oded Lifshitz, 83, a retired journalist and peace activist, will be repatriated.

Family Pleads for Forensic Confirmation

The Bibas family released a statement urging Israelis to await forensic identification before drawing conclusions. “We ask everyone to wait before eulogizing our loved ones,” the statement read.

Netanyahu: “The Heart of an Entire Nation Breaks”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted to the news with sorrow, stating, “The heart of an entire nation breaks.“

Disputed Cause of Death

Hamas claims all four hostages were killed in Israeli airstrikes, while Israel had previously expressed “grave concern“ over the Bibas family’s well-being.

Ceasefire Agreement and Prisoner Exchange

This return is part of a ceasefire deal, which includes the following key points:

Hamas will release six living Israeli hostages on Saturday.

In total, Hamas is set to return 33 hostages, eight of whom are believed to be dead.

In exchange, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including individuals serving life sentences for deadly attacks.

The Bibas Family’s Captivity

Shiri Bibas and her two sons were abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz. Their story became a national symbol of suffering. Her husband, Yarden Bibas, was freed earlier this month.

Oded Lifshitz: A Journalist and Peace Advocate

Lifshitz was one of the oldest hostages taken by Hamas. A lifelong advocate for Arab rights, he dedicated his later years to helping Palestinians receive medical care in Israel through the “On the Way to Recovery“ initiative.

His daughter, a London-based artist, had held onto hope that he might survive but was also bracing for the worst.

Lifshitz Family Statement

“These are difficult hours for us, after being informed that our beloved Oded is among the deceased hostages who will be returned,” his family said. “For 502 days, we hoped and prayed for a different outcome. Until we receive absolute certainty, our journey is not over.”

Somber Return Amid National Mourning

While the recent return of 19 living hostages was met with celebrations, the handover of bodies on Thursday will cast a somber mood across the nation. The tragedy of the Bibas family and Lifshitz has underscored the deep human toll of the war.

Meanwhile, the release of six more hostages on Saturday marks a key moment in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations. However, many Israelis continue to demand the return of all remaining captives, dead or alive.

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas narrowly avoided collapse on Saturday as three Israeli hostages were released in Gaza. In exchange, Israel began freeing 369 Palestinian prisoners and detainees, marking another significant development in the ongoing conflict.

Hostages Released in Gaza

The three freed Israelis—Iair Horn (46), Sagui Dekel Chen (36), and Sasha (Alexander) Troufanov—were handed over by Hamas in Khan Younis, where they were seen standing on a stage flanked by armed militants. Shortly after, Israeli forces transported them to safety.

Celebrations and Emotional Reunions

As the first bus carrying Palestinian prisoners left Israel’s Ofer jail in the West Bank, cheers erupted in Ramallah, where supporters waved Palestinian flags. Among the released prisoners was Musa Nawarwa (70) from Bethlehem, a former Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades commander, who expressed his surprise at being freed:
“We didn’t expect to be freed, but God is great, God set us free.”

Back in Israel, the hostage release sparked an outpouring of emotion. In Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square, people broke into cheers and tears upon learning that the Red Cross was escorting the freed Israelis to safety. Residents near the Gaza border lined the roads, waving Israeli flags as the hostages were driven out of Gaza.

Personal Stories of the Hostages

Iair Horn was kidnapped alongside his younger brother Eitan from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023. His family expressed relief but emphasized that their ordeal was not over:
“Now, we can breathe a little. But our family won’t truly breathe until Eitan is home.”

Sagui Dekel Chen, a U.S.-Israeli citizen, was abducted while fighting off Hamas attackers to protect his pregnant wife and two young daughters. His release means he will meet his newborn daughter for the first time.

Sasha Troufanov, a Russian-Israeli, was kidnapped along with his mother, grandmother, and girlfriend—all of whom were released in November 2023. His father was killed in the October 7 attack on Nir Oz, one of the hardest-hit Israeli communities.

Palestinian Prisoner Release and Exchange Deal

The release of these three Israelis comes as part of a deal brokered to maintain a fragile ceasefire. Hamas had earlier threatened to halt hostage releases, accusing Israel of violating the truce, while Israel warned of renewed military action if the agreement collapsed.

So far, 19 Israeli and 5 Thai hostages have been freed, leaving 73 still in captivity, around half of whom Israeli authorities have declared dead in absentia.

The Future of the Ceasefire and U.S. Involvement

The ceasefire, which began on January 19, has entered its 42nd day. It is structured in phases:

Initial Hostage-Prisoner Exchanges – Hamas agreed to release 33 Israeli hostages, primarily women, children, elderly, and sick detainees, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Negotiations for Remaining Hostages – Talks will focus on returning all remaining hostages, leading to a complete Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.

End of War & Gaza Reconstruction – The final phase aims to rebuild Gaza, which has been devastated by the war, leaving most of its 2.3 million residents homeless and struggling with food, water, and electricity shortages.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested moving Palestinians out of Gaza permanently and placing the region under U.S. administration for redevelopment—an idea strongly rejected by Palestinian leaders, Arab states, and Western allies.

Casualty Figures and the Impact of War

The conflict, which escalated after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack, has led to:

1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages taken, according to Israel.

Over 48,000 Palestinians killed, per Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The displacement of most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, creating a humanitarian crisis.

Conclusion

As the ceasefire holds—for now—the release of hostages and prisoners provides a temporary pause in hostilities. However, with tensions still high and political uncertainty looming, the future of the truce remains fragile.

Key Highlights:

Trump’s Demand: Former President Donald Trump stated that Israel should cancel the ceasefire with Hamas if all hostages are not released by Saturday at noon.

Hamas Delay: Hamas has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire, delaying further hostage releases.

U.S. Position: Trump claimed he was speaking personally but hinted at potential U.S. involvement if Hamas does not comply.

Gaza Controversy: Trump reiterated his stance that Palestinians would not have the right to return to Gaza, contradicting his administration’s earlier statements.

Arab Nations’ Response: Egypt and Jordan have opposed Trump’s relocation proposal, with Egypt reaffirming support for a two-state solution.

Hostage Concerns: Trump expressed fear that many remaining hostages may be critically ill or already deceased.

Trump Urges Israel to Act if Hostages Aren’t Freed

Former President Donald Trump declared on Monday that Israel should cancel the ceasefire with Hamas if all remaining hostages are not released by Saturday at noon. Speaking to reporters, Trump warned, “If they’re not here, all hell is going to break out.” However, he also acknowledged that the final decision rests with Israel, stating, “I’m speaking for myself. Israel can override it.”

His comments came after Hamas accused Israel of violating the three-week-old ceasefire, leading to a delay in hostage releases. Over the weekend, three visibly emaciated hostages were freed, fueling concerns about the health of those still in captivity.

Trump’s Controversial Gaza Plan

In a separate interview with Fox News, Trump reaffirmed his position on Gaza, stating that Palestinians would not have the right to return under his proposed U.S. “ownership” of the war-torn region. This contradicts earlier remarks from his administration, which suggested temporary relocation instead of permanent displacement.

Under Trump’s vision, Gaza would become “the Riviera of the Middle East”, a real estate investment opportunity. He suggested relocating Palestinians to “safe communities, a little bit away from where they are, where all of this danger is.”

Backlash from Arab Nations

Egypt and Jordan have strongly opposed Trump’s relocation proposal. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement rejecting any forced transfer of Palestinians and reaffirming the need for a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Tuesday. When asked how he would convince Abdullah to accept Palestinians, Trump replied, “I do think he’ll take, and I think other countries will take also. They have good hearts.”

However, he also threatened to withhold U.S. aid from countries that refuse to cooperate. When pressed on whether he would cut financial support, Trump responded, “Yeah, maybe, sure why not. If they don’t, I would conceivably withhold aid, yes.”

Hostage Families Demand Action

Families of hostages have urged Trump and his team to push for a complete release of all captives this week. Rachel and Jon Goldberg-Polin, whose son Hersh was killed in captivity, released a video message calling for urgency:

“All 76 hostages out this week. End of war. Who benefits from dragging it out for so long? Not the people of this region. Let’s get it done right now.”

Trump expressed doubt over the survival of many remaining hostages, saying, “Based on what I saw over the past two days, they’re not going to be alive for long.”

Hamas and Global Reaction

A senior Hamas official, Izzat al-Rishq, dismissed Trump’s comments as “absurd”, accusing him of viewing the Palestinian issue as a real estate deal. He insisted that all forced relocation plans “will fail.”

Meanwhile, global concerns are rising over the fragile ceasefire, with many warning that Trump’s statements could further destabilize the region.

What’s Next?

Saturday Deadline: If Hamas does not release all hostages, Trump has called for canceling the ceasefire.

Diplomatic Talks: Jordan’s King Abdullah II will discuss Palestinian displacement concerns with Trump at the White House.

Regional Tensions: Arab nations continue to oppose forced relocation, emphasizing the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

The situation remains highly volatile, and the coming days could determine whether peace talks progress or conflict escalates.

Hamas Threatens to Delay Hostage Release, Accuses Israel of Ceasefire Violations

Tensions Rise as Hamas Warns of Postponement

Hamas has threatened to delay the next scheduled hostage release in Gaza, claiming Israel has violated the terms of the ceasefire agreement. The announcement, made Monday by Hamas’ military wing spokesman Abu Obeida, stated that the release set for Saturday would be postponed “until further notice” unless Israel complies with the deal.

Israel, in turn, has called Hamas’ threat a “complete violation of the ceasefire” and has ordered its military to prepare for “any possible scenario” in Gaza.

Hamas’ Accusations Against Israel

Hamas claims Israel has breached the ceasefire terms by:

Blocking displaced Palestinians from returning to northern Gaza.

Targeting civilians with shelling and gunfire.

Delaying humanitarian aid, including fuel, medical supplies, and temporary shelters.

In a later statement, Hamas suggested there was still an opportunity for the hostage release to move forward if Israel complied with the deal.

“By issuing this statement five days ahead of the scheduled prisoner handover, Hamas aims to give mediators time to pressure Israel into honoring its commitments.”

Israel’s Response: Military on High Alert

Following Hamas’ announcement, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the military to increase readiness and postpone leave for combat soldiers in southern Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also reinforced its presence, anticipating possible escalations.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has moved up a security cabinet meeting to discuss the situation, signaling the urgency of the matter.

Public Pressure and Political Reactions

The hostage crisis has deeply affected the Israeli public, especially after images of three emaciated hostages released on Saturday surfaced, heightening fears for those still in captivity.

Protests erupted in Tel Aviv Monday night, with demonstrators accusing Netanyahu’s government of sabotaging the ceasefire deal.

Right-wing Israeli politicians have pushed for an immediate return to military action in Gaza.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested permanently displacing Palestinians from Gaza and proposed the U.S. should “own” the territory, adding further uncertainty to the situation.

Hostage Situation: The Numbers So Far

Since the ceasefire began on January 19, Hamas has released:

16 Israeli hostages (out of 33 promised in the first phase).

Three hostages last Saturday, in exchange for 183 Palestinian prisoners.

Who Is Still in Captivity?

73 hostages remain in Gaza (out of 251 taken on October 7, 2023).

Three additional hostages have been held since 2014.

Eight of the 33 hostages expected in the first phase are confirmed dead.

What’s Next?

While Hamas’ threat is serious, past disputes between the two sides have been resolved through mediators. However, with military tensions rising and political pressure mounting in Israel, the fragile ceasefire is at risk of collapse.

The Hostage and Missing Families Forum has urged mediators to step in, stating:

“Time is of the essence. All hostages must be urgently rescued from this horrific situation.”

As the clock ticks, the fate of dozens of hostages—and the stability of the ceasefire—hangs in the balance.

Soccer-Loving Nun from Brazil Becomes World’s Oldest Living Person at Nearly 117

A soccer-loving nun from Brazil has recently claimed the title of the world’s oldest living person at nearly 117 years old, following the death of Japan’s Tomiko Itooka in December.

Sister Inah Canabarro, who was once considered too frail to survive childhood, defied the odds. Her 84-year-old nephew, Cleber Canabarro, shared with The Associated Press that Sister Inah was so thin growing up that many believed she wouldn’t make it. Yet, she has now surpassed 116 years, earning her place in history.

LongeviQuest, an organization that tracks supercentenarians worldwide, confirmed the milestone. They recently declared Sister Inah the oldest living person with validated early life records. A video from the organization in February showed the cheerful nun laughing, sharing miniature paintings of wildflowers she once created, and reciting the Hail Mary prayer.

When asked about the secret to her remarkable longevity, Sister Inah credits her deep Catholic faith. In a message to visitors at her retirement home in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, she shared her positive outlook on life: “I’m young, pretty, and friendly — all very good qualities that you have too.”

Her nephew, who visits her every Saturday, says she is particularly joyful when hearing his voice, especially after two hospitalizations left her weak and with difficulty speaking.

Sister Inah was born on June 8, 1908, into a large family in southern Brazil. While her birth was officially recorded two weeks later, her nephew insists that she was actually born on May 27. Her great-grandfather was a renowned Brazilian general who played a key role in the country’s post-independence struggles.

As a teenager, Sister Inah began her religious life and worked in Montevideo, Uruguay, for two years before moving to Rio de Janeiro and later settling in Rio Grande do Sul. A lifelong educator, she taught many students, including Gen. João Figueiredo, Brazil’s last military dictator (1964-1985). She was also a beloved figure who established two marching bands for schools near the border between Uruguay and Brazil.

Sister Inah received a special honor on her 110th birthday when Pope Francis recognized her. She holds the title of the second-oldest documented nun, after Lucile Randon, who passed away in 2023 at 118 years old.

Known for her lifelong support of soccer, she is celebrated annually by her local team, Inter, who commemorates the birthday of its oldest fan. Her room is adorned with red and white gifts from the club, and she remains an iconic figure for its supporters. In a video celebrating her 116th birthday, she proudly declared, “White or black, rich or poor, whoever you are, Inter is the team of the people.”

After the passing of Tomiko Itooka, Sister Inah now holds the title of the world’s oldest living person. She is also ranked as the 20th-oldest person ever documented, following Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who passed away in 1997 at the age of 122.

Sister Inah’s story continues to inspire, proving that resilience, faith, and joy can lead to an extraordinary and fulfilling life.

Tomiko Itooka, World’s Oldest Person, Dies at 116

Tomiko Itooka, the world’s oldest person as recognized by Guinness World Records, has passed away at the age of 116. The news was confirmed by an official from Ashiya city in Japan on Saturday. Itooka died on December 29 at a care home in Ashiya, located in Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan.

Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Itooka was known for her sprightly spirit and love of life. She was particularly fond of bananas and Calpis, a yogurt-flavored Japanese drink. Last year, following the passing of 117-year-old Maria Branyas, Itooka was recognized as the world’s oldest person by the Gerontology Research Group.

Upon learning of her ranking as the world’s oldest supercentenarian, Itooka simply expressed gratitude with a humble “Thank you.”

A Life Full of Achievements and Love

Throughout her life, Itooka demonstrated a strong sense of adventure and vitality. In high school, she was an avid volleyball player, and she even scaled the 3,067-meter (10,062-foot) Mount Ontake twice.

She married at the age of 20 and went on to have two daughters and two sons. During World War II, Itooka managed the office of her husband’s textile factory. After her husband’s death in 1979, she lived alone in Nara, where she continued to lead an active and fulfilling life.

At the age of 116, Itooka celebrated her birthday with flowers, a cake, and a heartfelt card from the mayor. Despite her status as the world’s oldest person, she maintained a humble, gracious demeanor.

A Loving Family and Legacy

Itooka is survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren. A funeral service was held with family and friends, honoring her remarkable life.

Following her passing, the title of the world’s oldest person has now passed to 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born just 16 days after Itooka, according to the Gerontology Research Group.
