New York (Journos News) – Peter Greene, an American character actor best known for his portrayal of the villainous Zed in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film Pulp Fiction, has died at the age of 60. His death was confirmed Friday by his manager, Gregg Edwards, though the cause was not immediately disclosed.
Greene, born in Montclair, New Jersey, built a reputation as a versatile actor capable of intense and memorable performances. He first gained attention with leading roles in the independent films Laws of Gravity (1992) and Clean, Shaven (1993), before rising to wider recognition through his work in mainstream Hollywood.
“He was just a terrific guy,” Edwards said. “Arguably one of the greatest character actors on the planet; he worked with everybody.” Greene’s performances were often marked by a brooding intensity that made him a go-to actor for complex, often villainous roles.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Greene’s early film work established him as a notable presence in independent cinema. In Laws of Gravity, he played a gritty, streetwise character, while Clean, Shaven showcased his ability to convey psychological complexity. These performances drew critical attention and paved the way for his breakout in Pulp Fiction.
In Tarantino’s film, Greene’s character Zed became emblematic of the film’s dark, unconventional tone. That same year, he appeared as a villain opposite Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz in The Mask, demonstrating his range from dark drama to broader commercial fare.
Later Work and Ongoing Projects
Greene continued acting throughout his career, frequently taking on roles in both independent and mainstream films. At the time of his death, he was reportedly involved in two projects, including a documentary examining the U.S. federal government’s withdrawal of funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), according to Edwards.
Edwards added, “We’ve been friends for over a decade. Just the nicest man.” Greene’s colleagues remember him not only for his craft but also for his generosity and professionalism on set.
Peter Greene leaves behind a legacy as one of the memorable character actors of his generation, whose performances continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
