Authorities have identified Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente as the suspect in Saturday’s mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, which left two students dead and nine others injured during a finals week study session. Neves-Valente was found dead Thursday evening, law enforcement officials said.
The suspect’s body was discovered after a search of a storage unit linked to him in Salem, New Hampshire, where officers in tactical gear had been stationed for several hours, according to a press briefing.
The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Barus and Holley Building, located on the eastern edge of the campus. Authorities initially questioned a person of interest at a nearby hotel but later ruled him out as a suspect.
Investigators collected neighborhood surveillance footage that showed a masked figure approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a distinctive walking gait. Experts noted a noticeable inward bow of the right leg while the toe pointed outward. Authorities later released additional images seeking public assistance in identifying anyone connected to the suspect.
Of the nine people injured in the attack, six remained hospitalized Thursday in stable condition. The two students who were killed have been identified as Ella Cook from Alabama and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov from Virginia.
In the wake of the shooting, Brown University sent students home early, leaving the surrounding community anxious and awaiting further information from authorities.
