Carlos Alcaraz defeats Novak Djokovic in straight sets at 2025 U.S. Open to reach his third consecutive Grand Slam final.

Published Time: 09-06-2025, 16:30 U.S.

Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his third straight Grand Slam final after defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the U.S. Open. The 22-year-old Spaniard showcased athleticism, composure, and consistency against the 24-time major champion, who admitted age is making five-set matches increasingly difficult.

Alcaraz Tops Djokovic in Straight Sets

In front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2, securing a place in Sunday’s U.S. Open championship match. The victory extended Alcaraz’s unbeaten run at the tournament and marked another chapter in the growing generational shift at the top of men’s tennis.

Djokovic, 38, struggled to maintain intensity throughout the three-hour contest. Afterward, he acknowledged that his physical limits are becoming harder to overcome.

“It’s frustrating on the court when you are not able to keep up with that level physically, but at the same time, it’s something expected with age,” Djokovic told reporters.

A Generational Rivalry on Display

The semifinal marked the third time this season that Djokovic exited at the same stage of a Grand Slam. He has now lost multiple semifinal matches to either Alcaraz or world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, has reached the final in each of his last eight tour-level tournaments. Since April, he holds a record of 44-2 and has not dropped a set in New York. The Spaniard is chasing his sixth major title and second U.S. Open crown.

He credited his recent success to consistency and maturity:

“I’m working on just being steady throughout tournaments, without ups and downs. I feel I’m getting to know myself better both on and off the court,” Alcaraz said.

Djokovic Falls Short in Record-Breaking Bid

Djokovic entered the match aiming for a historic 25th Grand Slam title, which would have set a new all-time record. Instead, his season ended with four semifinal appearances but no championships.

The Serbian acknowledged that the format of major tournaments has made the challenge greater:

“Slams are Slams. They are different from any other tournament. But I do fancy my chances more in best-of-three,” he said, hinting at possible shifts in his schedule for 2026.

Despite flashes of brilliance — including a trademark backhand passing shot that electrified the crowd — Djokovic could not sustain momentum. Even a brief 3-0 lead in the second set was quickly erased by Alcaraz’s sharp responses.

The Road Ahead: Alcaraz vs. Sinner or Auger-Aliassime

Alcaraz will face either defending champion Jannik Sinner or Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime in the final. Their semifinal was scheduled for late Friday, with the winner meeting Alcaraz on Sunday.

If Sinner advances, it would set up another chapter in their growing rivalry. The two split results earlier this year, with Alcaraz winning at the French Open and Sinner defeating him at Wimbledon. Together, they have dominated men’s tennis, winning seven of the past nine major tournaments.

President Donald Trump is expected to attend the final, continuing his tradition of high-profile appearances at major sporting events.

Alcaraz vs. Djokovic: A Recent History

The Spaniard’s victory marked a turnaround after two straight losses to Djokovic. He fell to the Serbian in the Olympic gold-medal match in Paris last summer and again in the Australian Open quarterfinals in January.

Speaking about the mental challenge of facing Djokovic, Alcaraz said:

“It’s not easy playing against him. You think about the legend and what he’s achieved. It’s difficult not to think about it.”

Style, Composure, and a Bit of Humor

Alcaraz played with visible energy and flair, thrilling the crowd with creative shots, including a cross-court forehand winner that even Djokovic applauded. He never faced another break point after the second set.

Though his 30 unforced errors matched Djokovic’s tally, Alcaraz’s ability to reset quickly gave him control. He finished the match wearing a sleeveless pink shirt and sporting a nearly full head of hair just two weeks after a buzz cut.

Asked if he would keep the new hairstyle if he wins the title, Alcaraz laughed:

“Even better. You will see. Surprise, surprise.”

What the Result Means for Men’s Tennis

The victory reinforces Alcaraz’s role as one of the leaders of the sport’s next generation. Along with Sinner, he has defined the post-Big Three era, capturing major titles while maintaining consistency across surfaces.

Djokovic’s comments about age suggest a potential turning point in his career, even as he insists on competing in Grand Slams in 2026. His three Slam titles since 2023 remain proof of his enduring talent, but the physical demands of best-of-five matches appear to be catching up.

For tennis fans, Sunday’s final represents more than a championship — it highlights the changing balance of power at the top of men’s tennis.

Conclusion

Carlos Alcaraz’s straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic at the U.S. Open semifinal confirmed both his dominance and Djokovic’s ongoing struggles against younger rivals. With a third consecutive Grand Slam final secured, Alcaraz has the chance to further cement his legacy as the new face of men’s tennis.

The final against either Jannik Sinner or Félix Auger-Aliassime will determine whether his remarkable streak continues — and whether tennis has fully entered its next era.
