Tom Troupe, Beloved ‘Star Trek’ and Stage Actor, Dies at 97

Veteran actor Tom Troupe, known for his work on TV and stage, has passed away at the age of 97. He appeared in dozens of classic shows like Star Trek, Cheers, and Murder, She Wrote, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of American entertainment.

A Long Career in Television and Theater

Tom Troupe died peacefully at his home in Beverly Hills on Sunday morning, his publicists confirmed. He was 97 years old.

Troupe had a long and active career in Hollywood. He appeared in over 75 television shows throughout the years. Some of his most memorable appearances were in hit series such as:

  • Star Trek
  • Murder, She Wrote
  • Cheers
  • The Fugitive
  • Mission: Impossible
  • The Wild, Wild West
  • Cagney & Lacey
  • CHiPs
  • Knots Landing
  • Frasier
  • The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
  • Archie Bunker’s Place

He was widely recognized as a character actor who brought warmth and depth to the roles he played.

From Missouri Roots to Broadway Debut

Tom Troupe was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and began acting in local theater productions. After serving in the Korean War, he moved to New York City in 1948 to pursue acting more seriously.

His big break came in 1957 when he made his Broadway debut in The Diary of Anne Frank, playing Peter van Daan alongside actor Joseph Schildkraut. That role launched his professional stage career.

Troupe relocated to Los Angeles in 1958, where he expanded into television and film roles as Hollywood’s golden age of TV was beginning.

Movie Credits and Stage Performances

In addition to his television work, Troupe acted in several films, including:

  • The Big Fisherman
  • The Devil’s Brigade
  • Kelly’s Heroes
  • Summer School
  • My Own Private Idaho

Troupe also remained deeply connected to the stage throughout his life. He performed alongside his wife, actress Carole Cook, in plays such as The Gin Game, The Lion in Winter, and Fathers Day. The couple became a well-known acting duo, appearing in multiple productions together.

He also toured nationally with actress Barbara Rush in Same Time Next Year and performed with Mia Farrow in the Broadway show Romantic Comedy. Another notable performance was his one-man show, The Diary of a Madman.

Remembering a Hollywood Couple

Tom Troupe was married to Carole Cook, a stage and screen actress who had a long career of her own. She passed away in 2023 from heart failure at the age of 98. The two were married for over 50 years and were widely admired for their deep partnership on and off stage.

Troupe is survived by his son, Christopher Troupe, his daughter-in-law, Becky Coulter, and his granddaughter, Ashley Troupe. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

A Legacy of Classic Performances

While Tom Troupe may not have been a household name, his face was familiar to generations of TV watchers. His roles across so many iconic series earned him lasting respect in the entertainment world.

From Broadway to primetime dramas, Troupe built a career that spanned more than six decades. His performances added character and emotion to every show he appeared in.

His passing marks the end of an era for many fans of classic television and theater.
