Chris Paul Hints at Retirement, Says 2025 May Be His Final NBA Season
The 12-time All-Star and future Hall of Famer reflects on family, legacy, and what could be his final year on the court.
NBA Legend Nears the End of His Career
Chris Paul, one of the most respected point guards in NBA history, says he may have just one season left in him.
Speaking at the American Black Film Festival, the 40-year-old veteran made a rare and candid admission about the future of his basketball career:
“At the most, a year,” Paul said. “I just finished my 20th season, which is a blessing in itself. But these years you do not get back with your kids, with your family.”
Paul’s comments mark one of the strongest signals yet that his retirement is on the horizon. Though he hasn’t made an official announcement, the window for his NBA career appears to be closing fast.
A Veteran Still Making an Impact
While Paul is no longer the perennial All-Star he once was, he remains a valuable contributor on the court.
Last season with the San Antonio Spurs, he defied expectations by starting all 82 games, averaging 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. His leadership, playmaking, and basketball IQ continue to make him a sought-after presence—especially for teams looking to make a postseason push.
But Paul seems more focused now on balancing the final chapter of his playing days with his long-term priorities.
Family at the Forefront of His Decision
In recent interviews, Paul has made it clear that family is playing a central role in how he chooses to end his career.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show last month, he opened up about the personal sacrifices that have come with his professional journey:
“My son just turned 16. My daughter is 12. The past six seasons, I’ve lived without them. I’ve been away—San Antonio, Phoenix, Golden State, Oklahoma City… They stayed in Houston.”
Now, Paul says he wants to stay closer to home as he considers his final destination in the league—ideally a West Coast team that allows him to spend more time with his children.
Searching for the Right Fit in 2025
Though he’s not officially tied to any team yet, Paul is expected to make a decision this offseason on where he’ll play next.
He’s reportedly drawn interest from multiple franchises, including the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns—both teams he has history with. NBA insider Marc Stein recently reported that Paul declined offers from the Charlotte Hornets and Dallas Mavericks, but has held conversations with the Milwaukee Bucks.
What exactly Paul is looking for in a final team remains unclear. It could be a shot at another playoff run, a reunion with a former coach, or simply proximity to his family. Regardless, the decision will likely be his last as a player.
A Hall of Fame Career Nears Its Final Chapter
Whether or not Paul returns for one more season, his legacy in the NBA is secure.
Over two decades, he’s earned 12 All-Star selections, led the league in assists five times, and been the floor general for multiple playoff contenders. His leadership and professionalism have earned him the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans alike.
As he prepares to step away from the game, Paul seems at peace with whatever comes next.
“I’ve been in the NBA for more than half of my life, which is a blessing,” he said. “But it’s time to be with my family. These years don’t come back.”
