DOGE Lease Cancellations: Government Offices at Risk of Closure in 2025

The federal government is preparing for a wave of office closures as part of an effort to streamline operations and reduce costs. The General Services Administration (GSA), in collaboration with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has informed landlords that numerous federal agencies will be terminating leases for offices and buildings in the coming months.

According to a GSA planning document dated March 10, these lease cancellations will take effect on various dates throughout the year. While this does not necessarily mean all affected locations will shut down immediately, agencies must either renegotiate leases or relocate to continue operations. At present, agencies are still determining their next steps.

Government Offices with Leases Set for Cancellation on June 30

Several federal offices across the country are expected to see their leases terminated by mid-year. Below is a list of locations affected by the upcoming cancellations:

  • Savannah River Operations Office – Aiken, S.C. (2,250 square feet)
  • Natural Resources Conservation Service – Amherst, Mass. (22,428 square feet)
  • Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service – Boise, Idaho (44,623 square feet)
  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission – Carmel, Ind. (247 square feet)
  • Agricultural Marketing Service – Everett, Mass. (2,789 square feet)
  • Indian Health Service Navajo – Farmington, N.M. (2,000 square feet)
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs – Fredonia, Ariz. (1,500 square feet)
  • United States Fish and Wildlife Service – Grand Junction, Colo. (1,444 square feet)

What This Means for Federal Agencies

The lease cancellations are part of a broader push to optimize federal spending and make government operations more efficient. However, the potential closures could disrupt services, requiring agencies to either find new locations, consolidate resources, or transition to remote work where feasible.

As agencies weigh their options, local communities and federal employees await further updates on how these changes will impact daily operations. More details are expected as agencies finalize their plans.
